i'm no expert on auto's by any means but i thought the 3 disc-5 disc thing is for lock-up trans. if you still have the stock 518 you dont have lockup so the disc thing does not apply. as for the stall, get as tight as you can without bogging the truck in high gear at low rpms. talk to the guys at hughes or any other convertor shop and they'll help you get what you need.
even the cheapest shift kit will improve shift quality, and as violent as it seems the harder the shifter the longer the trans will survive. it eliminates or reduces the slipping between gears which adds wear to the clutches. most just make valve body changes that affect fluid pressure and timing to the internal components. go for it
