This was the primary reason for doing this with a ZJ as opposed to building a tube chassis rock buggy. I wheel and camp year round. Doesn't take very many trips down a gravel road back to camp in freezing rain or snow to make you wish you had a windshield.
I returned home from my journey two days ago. Drove 24 hours straight home after a day of wheeling and breaking my junk at the Hammers. The difference between a dead stock D250 and a lifted W250 on 35 inch tires is night and day.
The truck handled the trip just fine. I was surprised at how little fuel the truck consumed. $620 was the total diesel bill for 48 total hours of driving. Through Oregon I managed 17.1 MPG! This is towing the above rig on a 10K trailer. Amazing.
The transmission did fine and feels no different than when I left. EGTs pre turbo never went above 1100. I am very happy with this truck. Even thinking about selling the 91 now as I really have no use for it other than being a cool toy.
