A518 woes

Postby bubba » Fri Jan 18, 2013 5:50 pm

Hey guys my 518 shifts into drive at 16 mph under light throttle. I'm hoping that when I adjust the TV cable this weekend it takes care of that. But on the bigger question, I've lost OD. It used to shift into D then maybe a quarter of a second later into OD, so when it stopped altogether I figured it had something to do with the computer not working correctly. Sound right?

How? I assume it isn't working correctly because it would shift into drive then immediately into overdrive but how would I check it?

Do your TV cable adjustment first. Don't worry about the TPS until you do that. If I remember correctly, for OD to be able to engage the transmission has to be in 3rd and there has to be a certain minimum line pressure. After that it is TPS and VSS that decides when to shift. On my 92, with light throttle pressure the transmission will shift into 3rd a hair over 25 and won't shift into OD until 35 at the earliest. Once you have the TV cable set, then work on the TPS adjustment.

I adjusted my TV cable and it made a big difference. The biggest difference was replacing the master cylinder though. The brakes were very iffy and sometimes downright scary but with the new mc the brakes are downright awesome! hahaha

It didn't bring OD in though. Isn't the TPS on top of the injector pump?

Mine disappeared :pale: I don't know if it was taken or if it fell off but last week I had OD (albeit way too early) and now none and no TPS... I went to look at the plug because I plan on doin the pot mod and nothing was plugged into it... I last saw it prolly about a month ago when it started acting up and I looked at it for figuring out the pot mod... gotta find a door key so I can start lockin my truck up...

Locking the truck won't help any. One can pop the hood, without pulling the cable. Just need a long skinny screwdriver. Don't ask how I know............

I have a TPS and mounting bracket, if you need it. Came off of my donor. As far as I know, it works. Never had the truck out on the road (no plates). Just drove around the yard.

I haven't decided if I want to replace it or do the pot mod yet. How much you want for it?

If the driver plug is MIA as well, your only option is a delete. If anyone else drives the truck, you need to make it as fool proof as possible. Using the rheostat or a line pressure switch would be your best bet. If you use the line pressure switch, you will need to rig your own shut off when you need to turn OD off. The rheostat method uses the existing system through the ECM.

I am considering the potentiometer personally. It looks simple and effective.
