Trans temp gauge

Postby coolhand_luke » Fri Mar 08, 2013 9:00 am

hey guys, I bought a trans temp guage and I need to know where the place is to install the sensor. I have heard the hot line is a good spot. Is there an easy spot. I dont really want to drain the trans but if i have to, oh well. Its a 93 auto by the way

I was always told to put it in the pan.

Ditto

I've seen some folks install them in the accumulator test plugs too.....not a good idea. Line or pan

Anyone know how much fluid our transmissions hold?

Have 2 gallons on hand if you drop the pan. The whole trans holds somwthing like 22 quarts.

Jegs sell a drain plug to accept a sender.
If you drop the pan, remember you can adjust bands, line pressure at that time. Lots in this Forum if you use Search.
If you all this ,it makes the work worthwhile.
Suggest you get the correct trans fluid before you start.WalMart was cheapest bu they only carry small quantities.

A agree with what monoblock posted. If you're going to be in there, may as well do some tweaking. I thought it made a quite noticable difference.

Here's something that I've tried with success and you can do at your own risk. My trans fluid is 100% tractor hydraulic fluid. I think it holds torque better because it's thicker. Thicker fluid = tighter converter = crisper shifts. I've been running it for over a year. I'm still happy with it and I haven't discovered any ill effects.

I am running hydraulic fluid in the 47rh as well, and noticed the same thing. The higher the number on the jug, the thicker the viscosity. I went from trans fluid to aw46 and noticed a difference. So I bought some aw68 to try out, and at 30 below celsius, it pretty much wont pour out of the jug. Needless to say, I didnt use it in my trans, maybe during the summer. Soo, i wouldnt recommend 68 for a winter trans oil.

Well i did add a half quart or so to top it up once on a warmer day. Frikkin trans is leaking from every connection, cheap rubber hoses and clamps. Gotta replace all the trans lines. Also the TC, transfer case, front driveshaft, front axle Ujoints and seals, master cylinder, and the radiator. :;-|: So I bought the 96, which is mint, except for the headgasket that just blew, so the 1st gen is at the top of the heap again, temporarily! Anyways, when the trans lines get replaced I am going to get a deep pan with a pan temp sensor instead of the inline one, guessing I will see a little higher temps in the pan.

What weight hydro fluid are you running? I'm intrigued enough to give it a shot wen I pull the trans for a rebuild

I'd have to look. It's whatever is in bulk at the farm. It's the same as HyGuard, but not the ridiculous price.

A note on temperatures- I'm in the north part of Indiana and does hit single digit temperatures now and again, with it being in the teens and twenties all winter long for the most part. I don't have any issues with the fluid, but I do have the heat exchanger on the side of the block functioning and tend to let it idle up for 10 min.
