Rebuilt Trans Q's

Postby matthewh » Tue Mar 19, 2013 6:27 pm

So this winter, I blew/burned up the trans in my '92 W250 while plowing. Long story short, learned a lot after the fact on things I should have done to prevent it.

So while doing my daily searching of C/S, there is a guy somewhat local selling a rebuilt "built" A518/47RH. He claims to have the paperwork on it, and how it was "built", along with the converter he bought for it.

Question is, what should I be looking for in terms of a good, rebuilt trans, especially for a A518? I know a shift kit and converter go along ways in these trucks, but what else? He claims to have paid $1200 to have it rebuilt, and he hasn't mentioned a selling price yet.

I know very little about auto trans, so if I buy it from him, I wanna make sure I'm not getting burned.

Thanks guys

Matt

That's what I kinda thinking. I figured if he wanted to sell it cheap enough, it would be worth the risk, but if he's asking full price, then I can have mine rebuilt and KNOW it has been done right.

Kinda sounds like it was a 6BT Ramcharger he has given up on. like usual, the post has little to no useful info, and his response wasn't helpful either

Look at the paper work. See when it was dated. Call the shop that did the work and ask questions. If you haven't already gone a d looked at the trans take someone you trust with some auto trans background. If it reasonably priced a guy can pull the pump and inspect for damage. Just make sure your ok with the price and a possible rebuild. I know a guy that can smell if a trans has been toasted, even if you have it flushed. You need tomfind someone like him.
As for what to look for on the sheet, a master rebuild kit. That will cost quite a bit. I'd ask if any of the hard parts were updated, like planetary sets, shafts, ect. 1200 for a rebuild sound about right with labor. My rebuild with uninstall/install was $2700 with a Specrite converter. And that was a 727. Over drive would add a little to the price tag.

I haven't had a chance to look at the trans, he's out of town on business. He did say the trans was rebuilt and immediately bolted to the engine, but he had yet to add any oil to it, so its been sitting empty for ?.

I'll dig into it further, and see what's the deal with it
