518 tailshaft housing question

Postby ellis93 » Thu Mar 21, 2013 7:52 am

Did they ever have a large hole for the speedometer to have the mechanical drive. If so I need one.

IIRC, your gear ratio is tall. I needed a LONG shaft 31 tooth gear for the speedo to work right. Nearest I can tell long shaft= mechanical drive and short shaft = electric.

I have a few trans guys that race mopar junk so maybe I can bum one from them idk. If not I'll be hitting up the trans part supplier,:( they're always expensive to deal with......the psi sensors I just ordered were 90$ from patc. All because I don't want a computer or be flopping and flipping toggle switches, did that on a few 700r4s for the lockup and it really got old

I know with O/D it's something like psi/mph but what did you do for lock-up? Set a specific speed and not have the ability to lock in 2 or 3?

Supposedly you use gov psi with two psi switches. Gov psi is roughly 1psi per mph....so I bought a 44psi,50psi and a 55psi switch to tailor the timing of tbe o/d shift and lockup. As far as working the lockup in other gears I'm planning on using a two way rocker switch, flip it one way and the psi switch makes it work, flip it the other and its hubed off in whatever gear I want.

I did this same trash with the old Chevy trans I've ran, only vacuum and brake switches are also incorporated. On this one and how the diesel trans shift so quickly any how I won't be fooling with the lockup and a brake switch. I've never liked how they unlocked when you let of the throttle,I'd rather it just stay locked to help with engine braking.

Oh and there are two switches T'ed in to that port,1 for o/d and the other for lockyp. The higher psi the more mph before you have whatever happens
