getrag problems

Postby Dodgecrawler2011 » Sat Apr 13, 2013 9:01 pm

92 5 speed 4x4. Tranny has typical finesse to find gears. But after a long drive in 5th empty. Its hard almost impossible to find any gear. Also in second at a low speed and very little throttle something is very clunky idk if its in t case or tranny.

Is it full of oil? Or overfull? These trannys live longer if they are 1 qt over factory full. It sounds like the bearings are getting loose. Pull the PTO covers and see if there is any end play in the shafts. If so, it may need a rebuild. By the time you realize it's loose it's usually too late and needs a rebuild.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

Could be the pins, one way to know for sure is to pull the shifted stub and look at them. Also pay attention to the end of the stub, make sure its not worn off.

All I've seen is steel on the end, kind of a flat blade screw driver end.

Pull it and snap a pic, several of us should be able to tell. Plus you'll see signs of wear on it,maybe a step worn on it thats not suppose to be there....that kinda thing

I'm going to go out on a limb and say it's time to do bearings, syncros and an input, at LEAST.
You may get into needing forks and rail bushings, too.

There's only 1 C-clip to hold the shifter in.

That seller on Ebay is a screwball.
He has the early 1992-1993 Dodge GAS NV4500 shifter stubs listed as fitting the '94-'97 trucks and he is dead wrong, but he'll find out soon enough when he gets bad feedback for selling people the wrong part. ;)

Mark.
