I hate stealerships

Postby mattme » Wed Nov 07, 2007 10:16 am

So I need the bolts to bolt my flywheel to the diesel and the clutch shop needed more info so I figured that 8 bolts can't be that expensive. So I called 2 stealers in the area. First one doesn't have them but they are 3.70 apiece. Call stealer #2 7.90 a piece.

Gotta love em.

I think I will take the ones I have for the original flexplate (was auto now nv4500) and see if the clutch place can match them up to something they have, If not stealer #1 will get my business.

not trying to start a disagreement here, but know that as a 15 year mopar parts guy with 2 1st gens who has helped several members on here obtain info or parts that the "stealership" reference is not always appreciated. i understand that i chose a career path with as much public reverence as a lawyer but not all "stealers" are out to get you

that being said,
manual trans flywheel to crank bolts part #6501680 (qty 8 ) list $3.70 each
auto drive plate to crank bolts part#4429522 (qty 8 ) list $6.00 each
there may just be some confusion with "stealer" #2 about what you need. then again they may be just trying to stick it to you

if i can help with anything let me know

I hate you parts guys...only because I dont have a job with a discount on sweet factory parts or internet access to check out cool sites like this :P

On a related note, I have worked at an auto parts store for the better part of the last 8 years. I, for one, am sick of being pegged as the "stupid high school kid" (even though I have been out of school for 6 years) or some sort of idiot simply because I don't know what kind of car everybody drives and what options it has. In many cases it is a simple case of some kind of ignorant/arrogant saslohe not getting his way and throwing a fit...which of course is always my fault. I'm sure this happens at the dealership, but I see it alot more as these backwoods geniuses try to fix their own p.o.s. vehicles...rant off

Oh, while I am here, I guess I will respond to the original comment. The dealers have not earned the stealership name for nothing. While it definitely seems Daryl is the exception to the rule, in my experiences both as a consumer and a supplier to dealers, alot of the employees at the dealers are only book smart. And I am sure at some point the dealers/factory/whoever is responsible has aimed to take advantage of parts sold over the parts counter, meaning maximum dollars. Case in point, a while ago I was looking for some door panel clips for my 91 D250, since they are a major pita. After a while of getting pulled off and reinstalled, some became bent. I planned on replacing them and solving my headache. It's only a heavy duty paper clip looking thing, right? Wrong. The "d"ealership parts guy (who I am in pretty tight with, cuts me major deals) told me the dealer cost was like $7 something a piece, list was $9 each. Needless to say, I left without them.

Not to say that the parts guy at my dealership hasn't taken good care of me, but I wish he were into 1st gens like Daryl. Maybe I would do more business there than I do.

That reminds me! Daryl, got a PM!

Jeff, if you need the clips, can you get them on a "Help" rack? I got some from my carquest guy. If not, I can get them for you. We have a body supply place here. (maybe I got them there? :? )

Matt, if you need Cummins parts, let me know, I get a good discount too at work. ;)

I no longer need the clips...seems I found a bunch in my pockets after a trip to the yard. I have since found them in a parts book at my part time job. Like $5 for 20 of 'em.

Point taken. I was just surprised at the amounts. I have the auto bolts and it seems odd that a shorter bolt is more money.

The 2nd place originally gave me a price of 6 buck for the auto bolts so maybe they did get confused. I had to restate that it was for the flywheel (manual) to crankshaft. Maybe I just got a newbie.

If you have any of the #6501680, can you measure the length? (from under head to end).

Thanks,

Matt

Matt,
You tried Cummins yet? If it attaches to the engine, they can normally get it.

Thanks guys. I am going to take the ones I got from the auto and the length and see if the local bolt warehouse can match the grade and the length. They have a ton of stock and don't mind selling ones and twos.

Pete,

Worse 12.9 on the auto bolts.

I tried the bolt warehouse and they don't have them.

I will try Cummins but I am guessing I will be going to the dealer.

Just so you know, 12.9 gets torqued to the same as 10.9. At least that's what the books at work say!
