I think you just have suction issues. Either the adapter, filter, lower body,or vb to case something like that.

Dump another qt in it,see what happens.

The issue has persisted through 3 VB R&Rs, 2 filters, and before the deep pan went on. More fluid helped it, so that's the direction I'm heading.

I have ruled out VB to case, filter, and adapter. It's either fluid or internal VB issues in my mind. I'd feel like an idiot if I ran around 2 quarts low for 4 months.

I wouldn't feel that way. That's just how cobbling vehicles together is. Change this part up here, screw that up down there......being trans related is even worse. The most important thing you need to remember is that if Dickin around with a trans was easy, everyone could do it. Some of the worst a$$ whippings I've ever had dish out to me by mechanical things was trans related. They were good ones too. Hell I have a s10 4l60e trans right now that has pissed me off right to the point of making me pull it ,and throw it on the ground and replace it with another core I've rebuilt. Some just don't work right from the start, some mess with you till your ready for a career change right before you stumble upon the error.
Caleb I messed with an 4r100 for three days once just because I had a neoprene check ball, magically now, decide to crawl from its bathtub to the adjacent fluid passage. Talk about feeling like a jerk.

Moral here, trans aren't easy....everyone gets there asses handed to them once in a while fooling with them. That's how experts are made ;)

I may have a 518 dip stick. I'll have to rummage through my pile of parts.

I wouldn't even say this one kicked my azz. I've had this issue and a no O/D problem when I forgot to test the connector before sliding it in. GM stuff consistently kicks my azz, Dodge and Ford stuff seldom does.

I found my 518 dip stick and indeed it is longer on the top end, which would make it easier to grab. I can't tell if it's longer on the bottom end unless I pull and swap them.

I wonder if you mixed the 727 dipstick with the A518 tube...

No, there's probably 6" difference.

The 518 dipstick/tube is longer so if I had a 727 dipstick in a 518 tube, the fluid level would be way high. If I had a 518 dipstick in a 727 tube, I'd have near nothing in the pan.

I'm about to switch to the 518 dipstick and tube.

I went out and laid under the truck for a half hour and I've convinced myself it's a VB issue. I'm going to have dig through a few books and some VB literature I have. I see evidence of fluid coming out of the overflow, so I have all the more reason to believe that my dipstick is accurate. I had both dipsticks side by side and they are indeed the same at the bottom end. Tom (txs) told me long ago that all CTD dip sticks will be accurate as long as they are used with their corresponding dipsticks. Makes perfect sense!

What I think I'll do is buy another shift kit, install it in my spare VB, and reinstall the spare VB. I have to make the connections in my brain with how overfilling results in lesser symptoms.

If your spare is in good shape stick it in....other wise you may end up with the same or a different problem then not have a good vb.

Did you use a torque wrench to put the vb back together?? And on install?
