Keeping my auto alive?'s

Postby 93 W350 LE » Mon May 27, 2013 8:09 pm

So I am doing the free do it yourself tweaks to the engine, creating more power. How do I safe guard my trans from a premature death. My truck is a 93 W350 CCLB. It has a Banks Power pack including exhaust, I have turned my fuel pin and bottomed the star nut, smoke screw in 1/2 turn, it also has a GearVendors over/under drive unit. It is my daily driver and hauls my 14k lb 5th wheel. Could potentially have to haul 1/2 way across the country, from SW Fla to Mo or Ok.
Any info or tips are appreciated.

fresh fluid/filter, shift kit, tighten/adjust the bands and shift points, deeper pan, bigger cooler, tighter converter.

do all the free/simple/cheap ones: fluid/filter change, adjust bands and shift points and add a shift kit at least, the other things will help even more

In my opinion, a quality gauge would be the first thing I would buy. High temps kill transmissions.

I am planning a fluid and filter alobg with band adjustment. Also want to add another cooler and a new temp gauge.
With 4:10's and the stock H1C, how much will a tighter convertor help or hurt? I want to be able to haul my 14k 5th wheel at hiway speed or close to it.
Thanks.

A better torque converter is one of the best things you can do to improve these transmissions. The stock unit leaves a lot to be desired, to say the least, but we have quite a few options to improve them. I would contact Dave Goerend about a converter for your truck, let him know what it is used for and what you're looking for and he can determine the best one for you.

A converter is definately on the Christmas list. Even if it's the same stall just a better built converter.

Before dropping in a 47rh, I towed a 14k 5th wheel with my rig. Had a 518 with suncoast convertor, transgo tfod kit stock coolers and a magtec double deep pan. I towed from Tampa to Beaumont, Tx. and never saw above 180 on the tranny temps. Might want to think about upgrading the radiator.

Do you have the stock under bed cooler with fan ? If so should be fine, if not check B&D or several others . Google trans coolers.

You want a plate style cooler.. not a tube cooler.

No factory cooler under the bed, that I've seen. Will crawl under and give a good look. I hread they were usually near the fuel tank.

So I found a Hayden plate style cooler, recommended for rv's and vehicles towing more than 10k, and a Hayden fan for just over $100, are they quality or are their any better recommendations?
Thanks,
