What fluid in your auto's?

Postby 93 W350 LE » Fri May 31, 2013 7:15 pm

What fluid are you guys running in your auto trans? My dipstick says DexronII but that is not available. Have been using ATF+4,is this necessary? What is best for towing and longevity?
Thanks.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't each higher number of Dextron supersede the last?

As in you could run Dex 2-5 in our trucks but not Dex1?

Also, like dunes said, I thought Mopars used +4? Don't Fords run the Dex/Merc?

Some generic tractor hydraulic fluid (I'll need to look) with a little ATF4 so I can see it on the dip-stick.

I'm running half JD hydraulic oil and some cheap at. When I flushed mine when I got it fluid was brown and stunk. After 10k miles its still clear with a little red tint but I can still could use a rebuild.

Yes the higher Dex supersedes, all my old Mopar ran DEXIII and my dipstick says DexII, the newer stuff runs +4( my 97 Dakota I sold), and Fords used to run typeF, if I remember correctly.

I've been reading some of you are just running hydrolic fluid, and the higher viscosity is supposed to help "tighten" it up a little bit. Any thing bad associated with this?
Thanks.

I haven't found any ill effects over the last 25-30k miles. You'll really notice a difference at first if your transmission has some miles on it.

I'd do 50/50 mix of hydraulic oil and ATF.
