is it tight baby?

Ok, working on the girlfriend's 93 250. it has an m&h #2 fuel pin, timing spacer, 16cm hotside, piston lift pump, 3200 gov spring and a freshly rebuilt injection pump and stock sized injectors. Its being used to pull her horse trailer around and does an impressive job for a truck of that vintage. The next thing I want to do to it however is make the *wonderful* automatic transmission work a little better. I have done lots of research on here and other boards and will probably be going with a specrite convertor. As they offer several lower stall speeds, my question is can one go TOO tight on a convertor? I have heard that if you have a big turbo it may be hard to light off. OK, how big is big?lol. The steel stator version that specrite lists has a stall of 1900rpm. Anybody think that this Wont work? thanks, mongo.

Welcome. Nice screen name

Stock stall is 2200 rpm or so. Stall is not the only measure of how tight the converter is. With a stock truck like the one you're working on, that converter should work fine.

A big turbo in the diesel world is generally a 66 and I'm betting you have a 54.

Thanks for the reply. I hadnt planned on going much if any bigger on the turbo or injectors. If anything it would be the 60mm cold side upgrade and a set of 190s. It still has to be 'girl proof', and i dont want to have to worry about egts.Does anybody who has switched to a tighter convertor have any sense if I will get any engine braking effect? 10k lbs of trailer and ponies is pretty hard on the brakes as it is.... m

I put a low stall in my 92 and it made a big difference in power to the ground. If the TC is to louse, it's like driving around in a lower gear when you don't need to.

Best thing you can do for the braking is swap over a hydroboost set up from a newer truck.

I'd stick with nothing lower than about a 1900 stall............

I'm guessing she doesn't want a smoky/stinky truck............I'd go with a set of 5x11 SAC nozzles over the 190s in this case. Price will be about the same.

no, she definitely doesnt want a dirty stinky truck. neither do i for that matter, unburnt fuel is just a waste. Thats interesting as everybody seems to say that the 190s are great for towing and very clean. what size are 190s? i couldnt find tip sizing for those or 230s. did some more research and the steel stator is supposed to be 1800rpm stall, and the aluminum stator is 1900rpm. there is a 10% efficiency difference between them. m

Bosch 190s are incredibly clean while driving...........they are however, dirty upon cold start up.

Yes I do !!!!!! It's a upgrade from stock that's for sure. I used my truck for years to pull heavey AG implements out of the field. Still had good take off, and top end pull.

Shop around though. Make sure you go with a steel stator, not aluminum. Compare specrites $ to suncoasts $. Both are good units. Also look into a valvebody or shift improver kit. This is more important than the converter in my opinion, as it will help everything else hold up to the added power transfer. Good luck and have fun!
