Stall speed ?'s

Postby 93 W350 LE » Sat Jun 01, 2013 3:52 pm

Read that our stock converter stall speed is around 2200rpm. Why so high, when we usually cruise under 2k? Seems like this would cause exessive heat in the trans and burden the cooling system. Why is it this way? I have also heard they were made sloppy to help handle the power the engine puts out, to keep from breaking parts. Any truth to that?
Thanks.

That is what I've heard. I put a low stall in mine at the rebuild and I'm liking it. Still sufficient "torque multiplication" happening, but with what I consider less TC power loss.

they put loose converter's in them so they wouldn't have too replace the trans as often when the truck's first came out they didn't know how they would stay together . So with a Loose converter they survived the owner wasn't happy but dodge was .

Stall speed is 1775 rpm for the factory 727 converter with a stock cummins at 400 ft lbs. Turn up the power and it stalls at a higher rpm.

According to Suncoast, our stock stall speed is 2200 rpms.

However, with what Remps is sayins is correct........increase power and the stall goes higher. One of the advantages to aftermarket converters (with the same stall) is that doesn't happen as bad...........essentially - it holds the power better.

Chrysler called it "input torque limited (at 400 ft lbs) with a stall speed of 1775 rpm." IMO that is not the actual stall speed, it was simply designed to not allow more than 400 ft lbs to reach the input shaft on the transmission below 1775 rpm. It is closer to 2200 rpm, if not higher, depending on the condition of the converter and how much power is put to it.

Makes sense..............

In short, I read this - " the Chrysler 727 and a-518 are completely worthless transmissions in stock from behind a Cummins turbo diesel "

Maybe if I put a stock converter in my truck my Getrag will last longer than a couple months!
