Old school IIRC. That and a large, in-line spin-on type filter.

Yes. I picked out one that would match the 1/2" plumbing though. That and the largest filter I could fit on it (and still be Off-the-Shelf). This particular one has inlet and outlet ports on both ends for flexibility in install. The left-over ports are handy for fluid temperature sensors for your auxiliary cooler's fan. ;)

Better pic of an earlier setup . . .

Well when I changed mine the fluid was brown and I'm sure the trans had been abused. It dicked with my convertor enough to make it want to pull from idle a little more the. I feel it should. I also have the pronged shifts when I first take off after its sat all day or overnight.

I would agree with all of this. I definitely have to have a foot on the brakes if I want it to stand still. However, I have been known to drop the trans down in 1 and let the truck idle through a field while I pick up hay bales, so it doesn't bother me.

Also for the first 2 or 3 sets of cold shifts, the gears last longer and the shift is firmer. I wish it was that way all the time :(

The Deere hyd oil is brown. CO-OP and some farm store oil is green.

Deere does have oil with 2 different viscosities. One more for severe cold, and may have to be ordered in many locations, and their "usual" stuff.

http://www.insidersecretstohydraulics.com/hydraulic-fluid.html Probably wouldn't hurt to make sure the hydraulic fluid is rated for the temperature range of the transmission. The stuff in my 47rh, I have no idea what its rated at, but I want to drain it and do some more research. Its still working fine, but is starting to look a bit burnt.

I've been running the traveller brand from tractor supply for about 30k. No complaints here. I also run a screen filter in the pan and a inline 1515 oil filter under the hood in the feed line to the cooler

I remember some one posting up about a strainer.....you wouldn't happen to have a pic or link of it would you? :)

Here's the link
viewtopic.php?f=3&t=10412

I am just about 100% hyd oil now. I drained the whole tranny before we let it down to swap the flex plate. Also installed a new torque converter. Filled both with traveller. Hygard is expensive. Then the dipstick tube had a leak so I topped it off with dex3 bc that's what I had. But had to drop pan to properly seat dipstick seal and refilled with traveller again.

My stock a518 now has over 280k and still functions 100%. The tractor fluid is definitely more noticeable in the morning when cold. I wish the converter was the same tightness when hot as it is cold. But I bought the cheaper one. The heavier duty one with a lower stall was like $100 more iirc.

I run a bottle or 2 of Lucas transmission additive in all Chrysler trannys. The thick stuff now the thin additive. Talking 100's of thousands of miles. I haven't had any of the issues my friends have had with their trannys. Now my current A518 is pretty old and high miles so it probably will eventually wear out but its been doing great so far. I run ATF+4 from Castrol usually because you can buy it only for pickup in store at Advance Auto with 40% off coupons. The hydraulic fluid sounds cool but honestly, ATF+4 is a highly engineered and refined fluid for the very specific purpose we need it for and it can withstand the heat of a non-lockup converter. Sounds like both hydraulic fluid and ATF+4 keep the trannys happy so long as the fluid is changed as needed!
