Metal in pan A-518

Postby lucky91 » Sat Jul 27, 2013 8:35 pm

At around 85,000 miles, when hoping to have the main seal replaced, I ended up with this A-518 completly rebuilt. A reputable shop, also about $3300.
Now, 2 years later, after noticing a leak I dropped the pan and found this.

I know Im screwed but I'll wave this flag for the sake of record for some other poor soul.

Has anyone encountered a similiar circumstance?

Looks like aluminum bits to me, check for cooler line flow, when the lube flow gets low the front carrier hub can start getting ate where it fits into the annulus gear.

Its aluminum in there. Check what was mentioned above. I wonder if it could be the aluminum 4 pinion planet in there loosing its teeth? I've seen some of those strip the teeth out of the planet on different forums.

Isn't there a chance that's coming out of the converter? Maybe an el'cheapo rebuilt with an aluminum stator?

Edited to include complete thought

dazed, the tranny is still pulling, if i read the original post correctly. When the front carrier splines strip, you don't move. all that aluminum may be restricting flow through the filter, too.

Thanks for the feedback. It is aluminium. Also I noticed at 60 mph, when letting off the gas, there is a vibration that last only a second.
There was a small amount of aluminium in the filter too. I'm gonna check the cooler lines now.

Yeah I know that I was just curious if they were starting to chip off but not sheared all the way.

The only noticeable difference is a harsh but brief vibration when letting off of the acceleration in 4th gear.

Does the vibration do it just cruising no load? Or when you have a decent pull on it?

Just cruising, but its a welding rig, so the constant weight is almost 12K.

Well that is a lot of weight. Positive the vibes are coming from the trans and not the pinion bearing or a worn out U-joint?
