What do you guys reccomend

Postby 1arock » Mon Aug 26, 2013 6:53 pm

My PTC refreshed enhanced torque convverter has f****d up. I need a converter that will let me drive 99% of the time like the old man that I am and 1% of the time like a crazed teenager with dads mastercard in my pocket. I've talked to Suncoast, Georend, Specrite, and PTC. I am not sure I want another rehashed stock type converter. I know all you fellas have an opinion, let me here them. Rocky

I don't really have an opinion on the converter thing but I'd love to know what happened to the ptc converter.

One of these days I'll have an informed opinion, as I have a Suncoast converter sitting in a box on the shelf but until then...

Goerend and Suncoast are both top notch companies. I would opt for who ever would give you a better deal because both converters will get the job done, and then some.

Haven't had any bad reviews from Suncoast yet..........that's what I usually recommend.

Specrite gets good reviews as well

Its hard to beat Dave Goerend. I know a few guys running his transmissions that beat the eyes out of them.

It appears that the sprag is coming apart in the PTC converter, when you drop it in gear you better be ready to go, you can't hold it back with the brakes. I talked to Lane the shop foreman and he said they have much better parts now. I have no complaints with the one they built up until now. It is such a PIA to pull the trans on my truck I think I will go with something that has a better waranty. Georend is lifetime, that's long enough for me.

Well if he admitted that they have better parts now, then he knows that what's in there is a turd. How long have you had it in there?

It's been in there 2 years and about 22,000 miles. Looking back i'd say I've taken it pretty easy on it compared to the abuse it could have had. Only occasional towing, no sled pulling or organized drag racing, mostly just back and forth to work. I have always thought it was a little too tight and am hoping the new Goerend will be somewhere between this and stock. I ordered their medium stall around 300 less than stock, they offer one 500 less also, same price.

With your mods in your sig, you should like that stall. 300 less than stock should put you around the 1900 range.

I`m running a 15 blade stator`ed "stock stall" Goerend in mine. It`s just a touch tighter than stock, about 300 rpm IIRC when talking to them, very little creep/push sitting at a light but it just plain puts the power down waaay better than the o.e. unit. Best money I`ve put into the truck so far. 10K miles on it so far and so good.

Also, IIRC, when I ordered it they had three choices, $500 which was a lower stall than the one I have, then $600, which is the one I got and finally $900....don`t know much about that one as I was`nt going to spend a grand on a non locking converter lol. Don`t know if they still have those three choices available....best is to call them, super nice/helpful folks over there.
It`s not about how hard ya hit...it`s about how hard ya can GET hit and keep movin forward.

93 W250 CC 4x4, Auto,7x010`s, D-Zilla/16cm, 5in exh, BHAF/Smoky...don`t call it ratty, that`s patina son!

I have a steel stator Specrite in my rig. Ive had it in there since 09', and it still pulls hard.
I just got done installing a bd valve body/suncoast converter combo in my old boss's truck. His truck is on the larger and lifted side, and I was hoping the off the shelf suncoast wasn't going to be too tight. Well we lucked out and it is the perfect match for his truck. The truck pulls and revs nice to about 2500rpm and then it pulls even harder. Don't let that fool you into thinking it doest have good grunt in the bottom, because it does. The torque multiplication is awesome. If I was going to build a nice street run around truck that towed there converter would get my vote.

Now my Specrite puts a little bit more of a load on my engine from idle to around 1900rpm after that both converters pull nice and hard. In big city traffic the Specrite will warm the ATF a little, but nothing to worry about.

Which ever converter you decide to go with, make sure it's going to be the one for you. Ask questions, and don't cheap out.
Eric

I've decided on the Goerend converter as they are closer then the rest and shipping is cheaper. I talked to most of the converter folks and Dave Goerend seems like a super knowledable and personable guy. I told him I wasn't planning to drag race or sled pull and just needed a converter to match my setup. He said "Drag race with it hook it to a sled every weekend, I don't care, if you break this converter it has a lifetime warrenty." That sounds like the one I needed. It arrived in 3 days after I ordered it and I should have it in this weekend. I'll report back after I try it out and tell you what my impression is.

Dave is a top notch guy. I've chatted with him through email a bunch of times and seen many of his transmissions have their eyes beat out around me without missing a beat.
