Getrag syncros

Postby Flat bed cummins » Mon Sep 02, 2013 11:12 pm

Ok guys I'm new to this forum I just got a cummins and wanted to know your ideas. I've been looking around and found some kits for the getrag that come with the synchros and bearings except the needle bearing but my question is how easy will it be to accomplish this task? What do I need to know, could it possible be the shift fork cus first gear can be hard to get into as well, all advise is appreciated.

Could it be the shift forks? Cuz today it didn't want to go in first or second, just was grinding then all of a sudden it went in

Can't say that I can personally give you any advise, but Ellis did a great write up on this a while ago.

Here's the link. viewtopic.php?f=3&t=12097

Hey Hey just seen this tread,I've been out of pocket lately. When mine did as yours is,it was the pocket bearing. The bearing in between the input and the main shaft,it holds the shafts in line with one another. By it wearing out the input it causes the front of the mainshaft to drop resulting in a (for me) 2nd gear that was a beooch to get in. One other thing I had wrong with it is that I noticed a binding feeling in reverse when backing down hill, that was weird and kinda hard to explain.

How hard was it to do? I have a press and snap ring pliers, I'm looking for the manuals on the getrag I found 20 page PDF but I want to make sure it isn't missing anything,

One more question what is your preferred place to buy rebuild kits I was looking but the ones I found don't include the needle bearings, and would you replace the shift forks? My first gen has 316000 miles so I'm not mad about the tranny and I got it for a steal of a deal.

You won't get those needles unless you specifically search them out. Folks seem to deal alot with Zbag, google them. I use whatever parts my distributor has, transtar industries.
I'd almost guaranty that trans has been built before with that kinda mileage on it.....unless it was pawpawed around

It's very doubtful you'll need them, only time I've ever seen any bad was with a truck that was towed with the driveshaft still in,with the trans in neutral. That French fried them something bad......along with shaft and gear.....made the trans totally useless.

I'd just buy the w/syncros Kit and an input shaft.
