Nv4500

Postby Mint93 » Sun Nov 03, 2013 4:04 pm

I came across a good deal on a nv4500 trans...
I would like to put it in my '93 4x4 auto
Anyone done this?
How big of a project am I looking at?
Any special challenges, big expenses?
Thanks in advance!!!!!

I recently swapped out the 727 in my W350 for a NV4500. If you use second gen parts for the conversion, it's not hard.
You'll need:

1st gen parts:
Pedal assembly.
Clutch hydraulics.
Clutch master cylinder support bracket.
29 spline input NP 205, or convert your 23 spline to 29 spline input, or run the adapter coupler.

2nd gen parts:
Block adapter plate (auto and manual are the same)
Starter (clocking is different)

Find a quality clutch.

You'll probably have to shorten your rear drive shaft, and lengthen your front. Also, trimming of the pinch welds above the block plate will be needed for clearance, I trimmed about 1/4" off, no more noises. Fabricate some sort of a mount for the transmission, I used a piece of .250 wall 3"x3" square stock. You will have to ground out the neutral safety switch plug on your transmission otherwise it won't start, put it on a toggle switch so the cruise control will still work. I removed all the auto trans cooling stuff, just ran a hose for the heat exchanger feeds, spliced them together.

I'm sure I am forgetting some things, but hopefully this will help you out.

Love it with the 3.07'sy truck has, it doesn't scream anymore since the 727 is gone. Shoot, it turns only 1600rpms at 70mph in 5th gear. Kinda nice on long trips.

I realize it's been a while since anyone has posted on this thread, but I'm really curious what fuel economy you guys are doing with the NV4500 and 3.07's.

Best tank, 20.9. Average 18ish, but my pile has 315/70 17's on it. I would imagine with smaller tires, 285's or even stock size, it would be capable of higher mileage.

Is the master cylinder mounting bracket required? Why I am asking is I was pretty sure that the master I took out of the truck I got the pedals from was a twist lock and had one screw in it.
