Transfercase questions and Trans questions...

Postby DodgeFreak » Sat Nov 09, 2013 7:43 am

I'm 90% sure I'm getting my dads 85 cummins\getrag cc thats 2wd. I have a divorced transfercase, I haven't looked at it to closely yet as we just dug it out.

I'm planning on swapping my 4wd out of my truck under it and running the getrag with the divorced tcase. How much longer is the nv56 and the g56 than the getrag?? I'm thinking I'll set the tcase back far enough so I can swap in a nv or g56 and only have to make one dshaft instead of two.

The nv4500 setup is 2.5" longer than the getrag...........I've been told that the (ok Iknow) 56 and 5600 are longer than the nv4500........so in an ASSUMPTION probably around 4-6" longer than the getrag.

The 4500 is longer due to the adapter plate/bellhousing area.........where as the 6 speeds are longer themselves in the transmission part.

If Philip doesn't post, you might want to pm him. He has a g56 in his truck.

Getrag 27.5"
G56 31.5"
518 32.750"

Thats from the bell housing to engine adapter surface to the Tcase mount.

Now on the G56 2WD and $X$ are the same trans. It uses a bolt on flange adapter for 2WD. Remove the adapter and a 29 spline 205 bolts right on.

The G56's also have two OD's ratio's The early model used in the 5.9 trucks has a .79 OD like the getrag and NV series trans. The 6.7 G56's used a .74 OD ratio.

I don't know how long a NV5600 is.

Does the G56 have a slip yoke on the rear or an acutal yoke like the Getrag?? (2wd)

Same with the 5600 is it a slip yoke or yoke on the 2wd versions??

The 2WD flange is just that. The later trucks used a round plate that the U-joint fits into. That round plate bolts to the drive flange. You would need a drive flange from the later truck. I think they still use the 1410 U-joints like our trucks.

I can't say on 2WD NV5600. I haven't looked one over. Douglas has a NV5600 2WD truck. If we are lucky he will see this thread, or can send him a PM and ask.

For the price of a NV5600 you can buy a couple of G56's. The sled pulling crowd almost gives them away.

Ya, the g56 is considered a "weak" transmission. Well.........it's not when put behind our trucks. I've never personally heard of anyone breaking one with under 500hp.

I'll have to start lookin for a g56, This will just be a tow rig\winter truck so I'm not to worried about the transmission.

When you find a G56. On the passenger side of the trans is a ID plate. In the center of the plate it will say G56-. If it has a number after the dash it is an older G56 with the .79 OD. If it says G56-R it is the newer model with the .74 OD.

If you find one I'll trade you an HE351w turbine housing for it.

I've wanted a 6-speed for my truck forever, I just can't bring myself to spend the $$ on the whole swap. :(
