got a rebuilt trans from a 2wd put my 4wd overdrive housing on it installed it and now i only have park and all drive gears the shift lever feels weird between park and drive even with the linkage disconnected. i had a hard time getting the rod to slide into the overdrive housing could this be the problem and i need to pull the od housing back off to fix this? or is there another possible solution?
ok been messing with the shift lever on the side of the trans and originally there was only 4 detents now i can feel 5 detents but ive lost park and moving the lever between the 5 detents while the truck is running all give me forward movement of the tires while the rear is jacked up
Sounds like the shift lever in the trans is not in the detent in the shift spool. The spool is stuck in one of the forward gears, probably 1st, and won't come back out because the lever is not in the slot.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.
that is the problem the lever is not engaging the spool valve. now how do I fix it. and the nss and the plastic piece it engages seams to be different. I swapped the nss but it doesnt engage the plastic piece properly Itook pictures just dont know how to post them from my phone.
Both NSS are the same and look OK. The rooster comb plastic thing is broken on the pic labeled "new one", so the neutral start and reverse lights won't work right. The plastic insulates it, for reverse lights it pushes in and connects the switch, for neutral it grounds that pin on the NSS to the lever. You are going to have to drop the VB and replace the shifter shaft with the rooster comb. And yes, you can bend the lever down some if you need to.

you cant see in the pics but the electric connections are different so i had to swap them. i guess ill pull the manual lever out of the old trans to get the truck on the road. thanks for all the help and quick responses.
