3rd gear grinding

Postby jmd4993 » Fri Dec 06, 2013 8:28 am

i just put in a getrag that had 124k on it. it was used to plow a persons driveway that was it really. i put in a valair dual disc. so when im driving it will shift to every other gear just fine but when i go to 3rd i will have to slow down alot or just shift out of second fast and it bogs down quite a bit. when i try to shift regularly it will grind and not let me shift into it until i slow down. i just ordered a new master and slave cylinder assembly cause the one that cam with the swap kit was old and i think the culprit im hoping of the problem.

any info would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Loaded question....that's what you've asked. If it was the clutch not disengaging far enough, then most all gears would scratch.....UNLESS,there's already a problem with the synchronizer ring for that gear.
I would think that the ring is bad (worn) and causing your issue. What weight oil are you using in it?

Drain and save what you have in there and buy some elcheapo straight 30w and try it out. If it lessens or stops completely you'll have your answer.

My last getrag didn't like 3rd.... had to shift it just right. The guy that bought it off me later told me it was a top cover issue and the trans was totally fine.

I guess it would be possible.....fork could be worn funny or rail could have a sloppy rail journal but I'd have to think there would be other side effects to accompany.

There could be multiple things happen inside the shift cover......most commonly the shifter stub will wear out,the detents will wear their aluminum bores, shift rail will ride up in its bore throwing the shift fork at an angle thus cocking the synhro assemblies collector ring, making it stick.

one other thing that comes to mind is the pre-load..... simple check here. park your truck on a level surface, knock it out of gear with either the parking brake set or wheels chocked [both would be good] so that theres no bind on the trans. being your truck is 4x4 this next step sucks. you'll have to take off one or your pto covers and see if the mainshaft/output will move forwards or backwards.....any movement is bad.

reason i say to check that is because these trans are the absolute worst at eater the pocket bearing inbetween the input and mainshaft. if there is slack, that can let the mainshaft rare up,angling the fork, and binding the collector. now this wont happen in forth because your shift fork maybe holding the mainshaft straighter.

this is all speculative as im not looking at it

Check the main shaft for up and down too. If the bearings get loose it will move that way. Check the countershaft for end play also.

My getrag doesn't like 3rd either. I have to shift real slow or won't go in. Had the counter shaft drop in March, so we rebuilt it. It still did it with all new synchros and bearings. Guess mine must be something in the linkage

We bought a NV4500 from a company on Indianapolis and it was a nightmare of a company. After the third time it was sent back on our dime(you have to pay shipping both ways for warranty work) we called a lawyer. In the end we got all our cash back and had a local guy rebuild it.

im buying a getrag that is fully rebuilt with only 10k on it. the guy is fred swanson who is on here and cummins forum hes been building built autos for years and the guy that rebuilt this tranny his name is red and hes been building getrags for over 25 years. so i think this is the best bet and its only $860 with the shifter and bellhousing. $280 shipping so its still cheaper than the ebay getrag. thanks for the info guys
