It doesn't look like its replaceable. What do I do? I'm new to dealing with CV joints...

If possible, rebuild it. Or find a drivline shop to do it.

Another option, though spendy, is to do away with the CV, my pile has about 2-3" of lift and running a cut down rear driveshaft, so both joints on the "new" front shaft are big ol 1410's. There is no vibrations, even at 70 mph....

Buy 2 new u-joints and a cardan rebuild, and put it back together. I always torch the u-joints out, then hammer the caps in and clean up the holes with sandpaper until they're shiny. Then just use a vice and a 9/16 socket to press the new ones in. The cardan doesn't make things too bad, you just have to hold against the little spring while you get one of the caps started on the 2nd joint.

Oh! Also, that cardan joint was a total POS to get out of it's hole. I ended up torching the ball out of the socket, then using a burr to cut the race into pieces. Then it was easy to get out.

Is the cardan cv ball repair kit worth while?

They have held up for me before. When the front shafts went out on my 91, it was because it blew the cage apart. The ball, spring, etc have held up to some decent, hard use.

I did mine a long time ago, it's holding together fine. Admittedly, I almost never use 4x4, but as often as it mysteriously eats the u-joint at the pinion it must be doing some kind of work. Seriously, that lower joint is always out on that truck, I can never figure out why. :?

When I bought my pile back, I decided to run that 1410 shaft, I bet I blew up five or six front drive shafts when I owned it the first time, at least twice was the front joint area...why use such a small U joint in a 3/4 ton or 1 ton truck???

I found the easy way to fix the CV joint. The SPICER 211355X does the trick!

So, you just did away with the cv joint and went with a std. shaft? Work good?

No I found the replacement ball with the needle bearing. Instead of doing a cv repair kit

So you used that spicer part you posted? I looked at that on your link and I couldn't see how that would work. I just can't wrap my head around how that works? Maybe I'm too tired tonight!

That part he posted looks like the piece my cousin had on his Jeep TJ. I rebuilt the cardan on his rear driveshaft (full 1/2 ton wagoneer drivetrain swap), and that thing is one half of the transfer output yoke. It cups the rear half of the u-joint cup, the x-fer does the front half, and together they completely surround it. Then the other axis of the ujoint goes into the big, cast center piece of the cardan holding the 2nd ujoint as well, then the driveshaft has it's own two full cups that the axis lining up with the x-fer output lines up with.

Clear as mud?

That looks to be a halfton piece, it definitely doesn't fit on our trucks. If he just got the cardan spherical bearing and seal though he oughta be good. They're just a huge bitch to get out.
