Right clutch for me?

Postby rbrettctd » Mon Nov 19, 2007 11:28 am

Im getting a soutbend clutch. Which one do I need? I was gonna get a Con fe but heard they are aggressive. If I have to I will get it. Heres my plan:

phatshaft 62 turbo
intercooling it so pump will be maxed probably
Water meth
EDMs (probably 435s)

Im shooting for around 400hp or a little better. It will be mainly street truck and drag racing, with a little towing. What do yall think?

Call Peter at SB and tell him what you are doing. He can recommend which one to get for your application. ;)

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

You needa full feramic clutch or a full ceramic clutch for that. Go to
http://www.valairinc.com/performance/selector.html and go to performance clutches. they are about half the price as SBC and as good if not BETTER than SBC. i have one of our 600HP clutches in my truck and im about 300HP and she is takin a hell of alot of abuse. if u need more info PM me and we can talk more.

here our our dodge clutches:

Those are nice looking clutches. Too bad none of them are rated high enough for me. :(

Clutches should be rated in torque not horsepower. A clutch slips based off of torque not power. A 500hp clutch at 2500 rpm can hold 1000hp at 5000rpm.

Brian you're one hundred percent right but most people don't think of their trucks as producing Torque or have TQ goals. 95% of people want more HP not more Torque. Our clutches are designed in the same manner as our OTR clutches and hold a ton of TQ, the main reason for the HP ratings is for what ive already stated above. But to be honest i don't know about the RPM because of centripetal force and that it requires more holding pressure with more RPMs. If my thinking is correct, i have yet to become as well educated as i would like, but when a clutch slips its not because the friction material isn't strong enough but the gripping power of the pressure plate and the clutch disc combined is what would cause the slippage. But i have a lot to learn about our design yet since im relatively new to our company. Even though ValAir is by no means new to after market clutches in general. Just newer to the pickup after market clutch side and we have alot of new products coming out in the future. I'm excited and can't wait to see what the future brings. In my opinion clutch prices will start dropping by other clutch companies in the future.

Basically 3 factors effect how much torque a clutch can handle. Area, coeffecient of friction and clamping load. My clutch runs 4200lb of plate load. The fastest way to increase the torque capacity of the clutch is to make it a dual disk, since it doubles the area it doubles the torque if all other factors are equal. 8)
