The 205 is spec'd for both AT and gear lube, depending where you look. I would use only gear lube myself since it is a gear set just like a diff.

The 205 and 203 are both cast cases and heavy!

This pic shows the easiest way to identify a 205 (round cover in the middle). The tcase shifter knob is another way of identifing between a 203 and 205, they have different patterns:

To the OP, i can run my truck up to 80mph in 4x4 with minimal vibration. All joints have to be in great shape though. I had problems with the front driveshaft to tcase mating bolts coming loose for sometime, finally used some blue loctite and they are no longer a problem.

i've ran 10/30 in my 205 for close to 40k miles with no problems.

i thought we figured the transfer case normally runs oil similar to the transmission to avoid problems if mixing occurred?

That is the thought in fear of a seal leaking between the two and mixing yes. In my experience it rarely happens.

I've personally had a automatic transmission junked because a shop put in gear oil in the case.

Any body know what the front axle side U joint is in the front drive shaft? The one I picked up from NAPA today wasn't right.

do you know if youre running the dana 60 or dana 44 front axle? i believe you could have different front joints based on what axle your sitting on. i know the 60 is king pinned and not ball jointed, where i believe the 44 is ball jointed and not pinned.
mine is stamped d60 at about 8oclock on the back side of the diff housing.
dont know if this will help or make a difference

How good are your tires? Any difference in size from front and rear?

My front axle is a Dana 60. After 2 wrong attempts, I've figured out that the ujoint I"m looking for is a 7260x1310 conversion ujoint. I don't know if they came factory that way or not, my front driveshaft has been replaced and I don't know that it is 100% factory. Now if i can find the right joint I'll patch it up.

My tires are all the same same size. I did recently replace the front two, but I was having some of these problems before that, and all 4 of them have good tread now.

I figured it out. My front driveshaft uses a 7260x1310 conversion ujoint in the front.

The front drive shaft has three U-joints. The highest failure rate has seemed to be the middle joint. That's the one that failed in my case. I had the same symptoms as you had. The way i tested was I put the truck up on a frame type car lift and ran it in 4WD for about a minute while it vibrated. Then I shut the truck down and felt for the joint that was running hot.

And as mentioned earlier, REPLACE ALL THREE. Remember to mark the position of the double u-joint in relation to the driveshaft tube before you remove it.
