sutter, how much end play should there be at the pinions? i should check mine today, i know ive got lash, but i didnt check the end play. no leaks at the seals yet so thats good.
diesel, you should hope its not the tc, changing the tc in the middle of winter sucks, even with a shop. i put in a stock tc and i put in a rebuild kit and both bands. i did this because i needed my truck back on the road plowing snow. i plan to build a heavy duty tranny this summer and get a proper tc. i have no idea what tc im going with as of yet. my truck is a dedicated plow truck. so i have to do some home work before i decide what tc to run, but im probably going with a goerend or possibly a florida torque, the florida is half the price of the goerend and sounds to be the exact same build, but i intend to call and do some more questioning before i commit to anything. i called all the tc builders that i could find. goerend was the most knowledgeable. but all were mostly clueless as to what to do with a plow truck application, they all had theories, but then said it could go either way and that they werent totally sure. at least goerend offers a free re-stall for thier tc, but i do not want to pull this tranny for the tc ever again. that free option doesnt entice me in the least. i want it right the first time. especially for the amount of coin any of these builders are demanding for their products.
sutter gave me the best advice, and thanks again for that sutter. so in the end and in my opinion, a tc is a tc and it boils down to how its built as to how well it will likely work. they all use the same parts but some choose not to use some parts. goerend offered all the best parts in their unit for 650. but as far as knowledge and a general knowledge of physics and engineering principles, nobody blew my skirt up. they all said we just build them for drag and towing. i got the feeling you'd have to talk to the engine/driveline building guru's to get any real world knowledge, but who are they? and why would they talk to me? im not a potential customer, i cant afford to be. but they at least have the trial and error experience from the years of testing and building.
if you know what youre looking for, youre all set when you call the tc companies, so long as youre not a dedicated plow truck. i did offer(jokingly) a couple of them to help them with some r&d for plowing applications, but i think i was the first person to ever call most of the tc builders on such an application.
but in the end i intend to spend a fair amount of money on all the best parts and i expect to have the best tranny i can afford. and it better last a long time. buy the best and expect the best. and when it fails call and complain. and hopefully get more better stuff.
