Lost 5th on my NV4500

Postby mhuppertz » Tue Nov 20, 2007 4:08 pm

I was driving into town today and all of the sudden there was no more 5th at all. No noises, grinding, loud pop, nothing, just casper. Is this the proverbial 5th gear nut backing off?

sounds just like what my friends 96 did and removing the tail housing reavealed just that we tightened it back up and gave it a little tack weld and 5th was working again

The nut had backed off, but there didn't seem to be any damage. I cleaned the the jam nuts, loctited everything, tightened down the jam nuts and the nut itself, and tack welded the nut on the shaft in two spots.
Tomorrow I put it all back together.... This is not a fun job.

When you had this problem, could you still put it into gear (the position of)? I think this might be the same problem I am currently having.

Yes, it goes into 5th gear position just like normal, but nothing happens. I tack welded mine and it's been fine.
