32 or 35 spline Dana 70?

Postby Diesel » Wed Feb 05, 2014 7:59 pm

I'm looking for a posi for my 70 and now I'm not sure what I counted when I had my shafts out. Is my 1991.5 intercooled a518 truck 32 or 35 spline?

If it has nuts and conical washers holding the axle in its 35, it there's bolts holding it in its 32 spline.

This has been proven on 99% (made up stat)of trucks, but what's the harm in yanking an axle to check?

No harm at all - I have to do wheel seals this weekend so I will wait until then to try and order/find (probably just bid on eBay) for a posi. Mine has bolts holding in the axles so I will let you know what I find.

hijacking here, sorry. so, are the diffs on the 2wd the same as the 4wd? my plow truck is a one wheel peeler. it sucks. im wondering, is it a limited slip or open diff? ive never cracked it open. its got bolts holding the axles in, not nuts. if it is lsd, where can i get a full rebuild kit? if its not, can i take a diff from an axle that is lsd and plop it in there?

You can't just plop it in there.....it would require being set up since the preload and backlash is set by shims behind the bearings. I have a lsd in a rear that I want to put in my truck but i'm waiting until I can get someone to set it up for me.

so i guess i need to crack it open see whats up in there, and if it is lsd then i should get a rebuild kit, and if not then i should wait till summer to get what i need or just swap it for a different axle, but that would also be a summer project. so much for instant gratification.

I swapped my ring gear to a LSD carrier and put it in, I replaced the bearings on the carrier and set that up. I didn't pull the pinion so I didn't need to do anything to that. I probably should have replaced the bearings on the pinion, but I didn't want to get that deep into it.

Do you have the special bearings to set the rear up so you don't have to press the bearings off everytime?? or did you just use the old bearings?? Or was it right to begin with??? orr... or ...because everyone I talked to said I couldn't just throw the lsd in because it wouldn't be set up right.

Yeah....a little more elaborating would be most helpfull.
I'm wondering what LS carrier you used, early or later. That 01 dodge I just bought (junkyard find) has one and it's in a 70 housing. :)

I got the LSD axle from a 1st gen. I bought 1 set of races and 2 sets of bearings, and took 1 set to my buddies machine shop. We put them on his rod sizer and opened up the inside diameter until they would slide on kinda smooth. I gave them a good cleaning and used them for set up.
Word of caution, I must have gotten lucky, because after I did it there was a big discussion about bearings being several thousandths off from each other. So the set up bearings could be a different thickness than the ones you install. That would be a real kick in the nuts if you get it all set up and then install it and it's too tight, or loose.

Yeah,I know about the bearing thing.I have learned that the hard way on a 10bolt Chevy rear :(

I did find a tread on some 4x site with a bunch of Dana 70 info on it,I'll see if I can find it again.
