1990 NV4500 needs new hydraulics

Postby Rmetzger93 » Fri Feb 14, 2014 9:39 pm

I have a 1990 Ramcharger body with an NV4500 and a '92 Cummins. I need a new master cylinder for the clutch and figure I might as well do the slave as well. Any recommendations for pre-bled parts that are simple and easy to put on? If not, then what would you recommend?
Thanks so much guys, I need her back on the road.

VE Pump with more aggressive plungers and all the screws turned to match
33' Wheels
Dragon Breath or some injectors, I can't remember
Borgeson Steering Shaft
Rhino Coat everywhere
60mm/16cm2 non-wastegated
2nd Gen Intercooler and Electric fans
... I think that's it.

Thanks,
But I don't see a pre-bled assembly on there. Do you know of one? If not, any tips on bleeding and installation? I've read the other posts, but more information always helps.

Depending on what bellhousing you used with your conversion, I'd say you just don't know what to look for 8) . http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinf ... cc=1095768

Bill.... why do you say which bellhousing? I'm using 1st gen hydraulics with a nv4500 bellhousing.

What slave cylinder? My impression was if you used an Advance Adapter bell you could use the 1st gen stuff. Dodge NV4500 bell, you use the 94+ stuff?

They are the same. Reason I used my stock stuff is because the person who I purchased all of my stuff from had a 95. His hydraulics were identical to 1st gen hydros. I believe in 97ish? they changed the firewall side though.

I'm running stock 1st gen hydros with 2nd gen NV4500 stuff, same as RC. I didn't know you could get aftermarket hydros...

I have seen at least 2 different versions of slave cylinders from 89 to 93. The early versions I have had have a bleed screw on the slave. The later ones I have seen did not. They seem to be physically the same EXCEPT where the line attaches to the slave. This means you need to swap the correct early style line to use the early style slave cylinder.

I have a factory equipped 92 WITHOUT a bleeder. I also bought 3 Rockauto spares that were on a close out sale for a 1992 that are WITHOUT. I also bought 3 spares with bleeder screws from them for a 1990.
The position of the point of entry for the prebent line is different between the two different application years. IIRC, one line attaches from the top and the other line attaches from the end. If my camera was working I'd post pictures as usual. ;) ;)

FWIW, they're not impossible to bleed. If you fill the reservoir, then move the slave in and out by hand while keeping the line at the top, it'll bleed out pretty easily. It would be even easier if you took the line loose from the slave and let it gravity fill, then stuck it back in the slave and started your hand bleeding.

I'm with Tacoclaw, I've done it twice. I fill the slave, than line, assemble it on the pre-blead master, pump the slave till no more bubbles, leave it over night and pump again in the morning than install it back in the truck. Just make sure that you hang the slave in a way that air will travel up to the master.
