Truck likes to stay in overdrive

Postby tim curran » Sat Feb 15, 2014 6:19 pm

So my truck like to stay in overdrive. In the last 120k miles I have had my tranny rebuilt twice, done a tps delete kit. And adjusted my shift cables every which way.truck goes down the road good but when I come to a big hill if if I keep a constant throttle my speed will drop to around 30 and I lugging the motor if I floor it my boost will climb upto 35 psi or so. The tranny doesn't down shift it stays. In over drive. It will shift down a gear when it drops to around 25 or so but. It's annoying seems like motor has to work awful hard in overdrive. When I tow it will do this too. Two different trannnys that were adjusted by the shop that rebuilt them and they both act the same way. How do I get this old to down shift and get out of her own way!

Mines the same way, I have to use the button to get it to drop out of OD.

Tim, without a tps I don't believe it will downshift out of OD. You could try installing a new tps from a 80's Chrysler for $30-40 and see if that restores downshifts. I think it will. Sounds like mechanically your trans is fine just needs the right signals now.

Have you tried to adjust the TPS delete switch while driving to see if makes a difference?

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.
