Rebuild getrag or NV5600 swap????

Postby josh_6bt » Fri Mar 14, 2014 4:59 pm

Hi guys getting ready to start wrenching on my lumber wagon and this time the transmission is the main focus. OK so the getrag needs rebuilding but i just so happen to a NV5600 and assorted parts laying to make the swap possible but what would you guys do? is it worth the trouble swapping? I love this trans in my 02 but I like the fact that the getrag is already setup and to do a rebuild is peanuts but I do like how the NV5600 is way more of a heavy duty trans which is nice because I am planning on more power adders. So should I stick with the 5sp or go 6sp need input. Thanks Gents!!

The Getrag is actually quite a strong transmission. It does have it's short comings, just like any transmission. Throwing more power at it is no problem, Bill Gilbert put 550+ through his and Stomp has done 899. It is pretty inexpensive to rebuild, but if you already have all the other stuff ready to go for a NV5600 swap, go for it.

If I had the opportunity and the funds.......I'd do the 5600. Tighter gear ratios mean a lot working, and honestly while I can shift my rag plenty fast from 3rd thru 5th it is clunky and does not like it at all.

I work mine pretty bad and have rebuilt it twice in 9yrs,both times it was pocket bearing related. It is tough, just not go go speed racer proof.

My dad has a 04.5 with a 5600 and its not much of a gear banger either. Maybe its because Ive spent more miles behind a 'rag, but the spacing on the 5600 seems odd to me. I would still like the extra gear though, Im sure it would help with the gap between 2nd and 3rd on my truck
