disk opinions-

Postby jethro » Fri Jul 11, 2014 9:59 pm

putting a 12 valve into a 2004 Ford f_350 with a ZF-6 - bone stock cummins (maybe add a gov spring-)
Making a work truck and truck to pull my 16 foot aluminum boat. Want it to shift and back up without issues
like being "grabby" or aggressive.

A tow truck company owner advised to use stock ford clutch out of a f-350 or 450 for a good street clutch.

Is this good advice ? Be using the fordcummins fly wheel- they sell several versions of south bend clutches-
wondering if any of those would be a user friendly as a stock ford one ?

Hopeing yalls experience can guide my picking one !

Thanks-

We put a p-pump 12v into our 03 truck, used the same folk's kit. I believe we ended up going with a 7.3 clutch disc at their recommendation, "HD" part from Carquest.

Service truck that grossed 14k at all times, clutch never whimpered once. I fiddled with the AFC, but the engine was stock otherwise.

I should be talking with them today--- I will ask them about your recommendation and get them to repeat it to me.......
Do you remember what brand of clutch it was ? Was it SB or the OEM maker (cant remember the name rite now)
Did you get just the disk from car quest -or the whole clutch assyembly ?

I don't remember, but I'm thinking the 6.0 PP and the 7.3 disc. Could be totally wrong though...

Nothing it it was SB or anything special, just factory stuff.

Im pretty sure I want a stock type clutch(plate) - organic lining from what I have read---- the only question is should it be a
Ford brand replacememnt or the SB unit or Valair ....... or will there be no difference in the stock ones ?
Will the SB have better quality guts in the pressure plate and bearings than the Ford ? (or other OEM )
Is the SB just a better quality , longer lived device ??????

If you're keeping it stock, a 13" clutch is what you'd need if it was a Getrag.

SB and Valair are preformance manufacturers. They take stock and make it better to hold more HP or be abused differently.

However, the stock 13" Sach's clutch in the Getrags can hold quite the power bump and have awesome towing matters.

I would go OEM, stock clutch for a stock powered (RPM spring is not really a power upgrade, just a RPM upgrade) Cummins. And you might find with the 6 speed, you dont need the gov spring.
