A518 Rebiuld Prices

Postby CumminsPride » Fri Nov 30, 2007 12:17 pm

I talked to a race guy here and he told me that for a full rebuild includes:
all new clutch packs
2 additional clutch packs in OD
Steel Planetary
All new bearings and Seals
All new seals in T-Case
Pull and Place
New mounts
$1300 and I provide the TC (He doesn't show a non lockup on his price sheet from Suncoast)

Whats your take here?? He has 2 cummins he's doin now. He has quickly became the local diesel trans guy! Thanks for your input.

For that price he is working real cheap. The cheapest master rebuild kit I know of is NAPA. It runs $260 the last time I priced one. It doesn't give any extra clutchs eather. So it sounds like he is using someone elses kit.

Minus the converter with the other items you listed. What he has quoted for a price means he isn't making much off his work.

If he has a good local customer base get names and talk to the customers. This will tell you his track record.

My local guy the last 1st gen he rebuilt came in around 1k for parts and labor on a 518. This included a hughes converter. But he does not drop transmissions. You bring it to him.

I had the one in my Jeep done, $1100. The same guy wanted $1200 to do my 1500 gasser. Remove, overhaul, and install. I pulled it and he did it for $300, plus a little extra for a planetary set. He would rather put them in and out himself, then if there is a problem, he has the truck for test drive and trouble shooting.
I know they aren't diesels, but it gives you an idea on price. ;)

Cool, sounds like a good deal then! He said the same thing about testing and adjusting.

Beware the cheap auto tranny rebuilds. My mom has been paying for hers for 2 years. I will redo it next time. What is there to adjust, other than the TV cable?

So, basically folow the instrutctions in the booK?

WHat about line pressures? how are they adjusted? Does the valve body have to come out each time?

To adjust line pressures the screw is on the rear corner of the valve body by the shift linkage. It takes an allen wrench. But do not go crazy on any adjustents on this screw. About 1/4" turn is all you want to add above its stock setting.

The rest of the listed adjustments are in the FSM. I know you have one DP. :D

I may have to dig it out and crawl under the externally lubricated thing :pukel: .

Just get internally lubricated before you do, it makes it easier to deal with!
