1989 Dodge W100 4x4....Transfer case question

Postby hokietiger » Sun Aug 17, 2014 6:59 pm

I have a 1989 Dodge W100 4X4 (auto locking hubs and 3-speed 727 auto trans)....I plan to change out the Transfer Case fluid. The truck has the stock NP-241 transfer case which calls for ATF-4 trans fluid as the lube of choice. No issues have developed with the transfer case and it seems to work properly.

Should I add anything else to the new fluid that may help with additional lubrication/improved lifetime of the transfer case??....Is it typical to here a slight "whining" noise from the transfer case in normal driving conditions??...Any recommendations are appreciated.

Thanks!!

Put in what the book calls for.
My jeep NP-231's and 2nd gen NP-241 liked the parts store brand ATF+4...

If there is excessive whine, then you could look at a new chain (they are known to stretch) and new plastic pads where the shift forks ride on the gears.
Some folks had issues with the planet gear shell, but...

its a 1989 gas truck, how much do you want to spend?
Rebuild kits with new seals and bearings are available.
