Fancy nv4500 5th gear nut

Postby ellis93 » Wed Dec 10, 2014 11:31 am

Wonder what happened? Looks like they had layed on the lock tight on the nut threads and set screws.....and it still came off.

And now I fixed it....say what you want, but it won't be coming off without a grinder.

How'd you thread it back on if they had the setscrews tightened? Do they not bite the thread?

I know loctite will release with enough heat, anything look hot in there? They may have just thrown glue on it and not cleaned any oil off the threads too.

Threads look ok, judging by the one pic. The set screws may have worked if they had spot drilled the threads once the nut was installed, gave a little pocket for it to go.
Loctite I have isn't rated for fasteners over 1", you have to get this other formula, with a primer to properly bond large fasteners.

Levi idk what they did. I wire brushed the crust of what looked to be loctite out of the threads. Actually I had perfect threads on the shaft and the nut was a little boogered. I guess the saving grace was this

That gold there is a piece of brass that sandwiched between the set screw and shaft. It has threads cut out in it.....probably from being mashed on the shaft.
It tightened up well,as tight as my 213 lbs could get it with 4ft of cheater pipe.

I wouldn't have welded it in there, it gives me the heebie jeebies thinking about the weld breaking out of the shaft when it comes loose again.
I found a slick set up, may have seen it on here, I can't remember. It looks like a socket with splines instead of the square drive. It goes on the nut and the hole on the splines, locking the 2 together. Last I knew it was about $175 for it, not bad considering the price of a main shaft!

Don't be such a woman Pete
It works fine, never had one fail to hold/stay in place. I've done several like this with no issues, one was ran out of grease and I had to rebuild it. About 5min with a cut off wheel and I could unsrew the nut and get to work.
It's not everyone's preferred method of retaining the nut but it works when folks need their schit back.

As always the customer has to agree to it,if not then they can or I can buy a fancy nut to go on. Most pick this

I wish I knew what the manufacturer of this one was.

Yup, I think it's slicker than frog snot on a glazed donut with a side of olive oil. ;) Simple to install too.

I need to start stockpiling late Chevy NV4500's. Mine was starting to get loose when I had it overhauled to get 3rd gear sycronizing again. He tried double nutting it but there was not enough room. I think they have a harmonic dampener that the Dodges don't back there.
