Making a 518 lockup

How they work, how they don't work, and how to fix them

For lockup control they sell preset and adjustable pressure switches, the adjustable would let you dial it in. The governor pressure port is 1/8 pipe in the front flange of the OD unit on the passenger side iirc. I would also wire a toggle switch to bypass the auto switch, on long grades it would be nice to have the tranny in direct and still have lockup. I intend to wire up bypass toggle switch in my 98, when pulling long grades with load when you hit the button to take it out of overdrive it also drops out of lockup and the temp gauge immediately starts climbing.

Caleb, that pic you posted is actually a 904-a500 front pump, the 727-46-47 reaction shaft support is smaller diameter than the pump housing as opposed to the 904 type that is the same od as the pump.

Does anyone know if the 518/and 47rh overdrive housings are interchangeable? I want to make my 4x4 47rh 2wd and I have a 2wd 518 already.

I'm 99% sure the housings are the same. The guts are different, assuming you have the assembly. The 47rh uses a better clutch pack if I recall correctly.

I can try to find it again but on CompD, someone took a 47RE and swapped a A518 OD housing on to make a 47RH.

If you can find it that would be great. I searched with no luck.

The RE has no provision for governor tubes and the vb would be all wrong.

Never mind, it was a manual VB build.

The case is the same except for the hole where the vb electical connector goes through, you would have to change out the rear support if it doesn't have the holes for the governor tubes. Use the rh valve body and put the re solenoid pack on it. Use the re connector plug and wire up the three wires that are applicable. Even the A-500 shared the o/d housing and output shaft. Only difference in any of the o/d units in a given model year or even between engineering changes was the internals.

I also thought the RE cases were the same from what I could tell when I had them apart the only difference was the support/od piston had the holes blocked off. I didn't have time to verify this weekend. I'm planning to do Just what txs said and run an re case with the 518 tail and the re solenoids. you should be able to get the truck end of the plug from a junkyard for cheap.

And the gasser connector is the same so bout any junkyard should have one.
