Making a 518 lockup

Postby dazedandconfused » Sun Jan 04, 2015 6:53 am

I know we have been tbrough this before but i couldnt find all the info this mornong. So been tossing this idea around. I'm still not sure I'm going to put a gas job back on the Duck. I have my stock wore out 518 in it and I Have a 4x4 518 out of a 92 gasser. From my understanding I will need for sure the 47re/re input shaft, should be able to use the 518 gas lockup vb. What about the intermediate shaft? I would think it would need to be changed as well. I k ow I'll need adapter and starter but are there any other parts I'm missing? This would give me basically 47rh trans for both trucks.

From TXS in a post on CF
bruce, you don't know what you're talking about, any 727 518 904 back to 1966 can be made a lockup with the reaction shaft support, input shaft and valve body. You could go back to 1962 (59 or 60 for the 904) but the cable shift valve body would be hard to come up with.

Okay so is the reaction shaft part of the oil pump in the trans? My next question, does anyone know if there is a spline/size difference in the inputs on the gas and diesel 518/618? From this response it appears only three pieces really need swapped to make it lockup.

txs wrote:if you wish to make your 518 a lockup, get a second gen flywheel housing and starter. for the tranny you will need a lock-up input shaft, a lock-up reaction shaft support and a lockup valve body. Between engineering changes the only difference between a non lockup and lockup reaction shaft support is one ball staked into the cast iron part. Indeed if you went to most tranny shops and wanted a reaction shaft support they will ask if you need 2 ball or 3 ball support. I believe you could use any truck lockup valve body , just check under all the covers for different colored springs and use the diesel ones if they are different colors. There was only one valve body casting for rear drive apps from the time period we are interested in. NEVER mix and match the steel (separator) and transfer plates unless you know what you are doing, that's where you will get in trouble. Oldest, the case work would be for trying to make a 727 diesel tranny into a lockup, they never made the 727 valve body in an electric apply version, they were all straight hydraulic. I still think you could use the 904 valve body as it was a solenoid controlled setup, but the 904 body will not bolt to the 727 case, the solenoid hits. So some work would be in order to use that deal.

You still won't have the double wrap rear band with the 518. I don't know if you can swap levers and get the double wrap set-up or not. Goerend won't deal with 518s because of the rear band, so I'm told.

I don't see that being a issue for me.

Some guys act like the struts bend left and right, but I never had any issue. I raced and towed heavy and never had a hiccup out of my transmission.

Right, Dave told me he won't build on a 518 case because of the weaker low/reverse band.

I have a 47RE core here I'd like to get out of my way if anybody is interested. I'm sure the plates are junk but I had the front pump off and it looked ok in there. I was driving it until I swapped it out. PM me if you want it.

An RH VB and tail shaft housing on that RE would be slick. Lots of good parts in it.

Caleb, the double wrap L&R band uses a second pin to anchor to the case, no hole and no meat in the case there, so aint happenin. I have always had the position that if a 47rh is available grab it instead of converting 518 to LU, 47rh were only made 2 years, eventually the supply will dry up. You want to keep the LU input shaft and reaction shaft from the same series, there have been diameter changes.
93 w250 6 speed 4" exhaust, caution, work truck, she's no beauty. building 1 ton dually 4x4, dana 80, 48rh, 205 Scratch the one ton, bought frt. dually 4x4 98 12 valve with the tiny rear doors. rides so much better than the 93.
