another 518 question

Postby 1STGENFARMBOY » Wed Jan 28, 2015 7:13 am

my old soggy 518 is doing something funny, 4 or 5 times now it has seemingly went into a full lock-up mode for a second or 2 when shifting into O/D then unlocks and back to normal O/D, is my converter fixing to crap out ?

I do not have any experience with the 518's, but why not do the lock up converter conversion written by Angry Johnny over on the DTR. ;)

What do you mean converter locking up? Did you swap the components needed to have lockup? Its not going 3 to 4 I take it?

You don't even need to go there unless you want to, has been plenty of lockup conversion discussion threads here. By the way, angry johny is hardly the first on dtr to discuss lockup conversion, I got threads on there going back 10 years on 518 and 727 lockup conversion.

no my 518 is stock other than turning up the pressure a bit and adjusting the bands.

it feels like the converter is locking up with no noticeable slip for a second or two after it hits O/D, and then suddenly
goes back to normal operations, it's like the converter stops slipping for a moment.

I am guessing my converter is on the verge of seizing up inside, I have seen them do it before and it will kill the engine.

Seeing how you use the truck (much like me ), I would not be surprised if the converter was ballooned. That generally makes them stall higher. However, when they balloon, there's more room than they need in there so I wouldn't be surprised if stuff moves around.

Good luck. A sick transmission is a head ache.

My A518 started to randomly shift from OD to third and back into OD. It started this about a month ago... After I did a big haul...... After I FORGOT to shut off the OD while hauling....... ugg!

What is strange to me is that it would do this only after I drove it a few miles. When its cold, it wouldn't do it. Being that I got over 300,000 miles on it, I decided to convert over to a A618 to fix this issue. I can't wait to experience Lock Up! Having a properly working tranny would be so nice... LOL

I wish you luck 1stGenFarmBoy, I hope its just something minor, like a solenoid, or a grounding issue. Fixing transmission issues gets expensive real quick....
