Whats better? Allison AT545RM or A518?

Postby oldestof11 » Wed Dec 12, 2007 2:06 pm

Ok which would be better? I know the Allison is a 4spd lock-up, non-OD, tranny but the A518 is a non-lock-up, OD tranny. What is better for a DD/drag/2wd puller? The draggin' and pullin' coming a couple of years later. Going into a 87 1500 Suburban :wrench:

Well, the lock up would be more useful for pulling, towing and racing than overdrive would. You might need some higher-range gears in the differential, though.

If the Allison is any more heavy duty than the A518, it'd probably be the route you'd want to go.

Anyone else?

Also, how would a Chevy 10 bolt 2.73 hold up to about 300 hp? I am thinking (for now) just a turbo upgrade and getting my stock injectors rebuit. Maybe even a 12cm housing. OH and a BHAF.

Well a 14 bolt is comparable to a Dana 60.....posibly a 70

a 10 bolt would be like a Chry 8 1/4

I thing it would brake vary ease.

IIRC, a 10 bolt wouldn't even hold up to a 350 sb with the juice!

It was cool for a couple minutes though! ;)

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

It would be really cool if the 10 bolt has the factory gov-lock limited slip....It'll wait until you've got good boost before it explodes  Then of course since its a c clip axle the shafts and wheels will come out.

Ok guys. I am going to bite the bullet. But still a little undecided. I know parts for the A518 is plentiful but what about the 545? I think being able to say "Yea, it has the Cummins and the Allison" would be a good coolness factor ;-) I am leaning more towards the Allison as it is cheaper by about $20. Plus in stock form the Allison can handle more.

Anything else?
