Block mounted trans cooler

Postby shackwrrr » Tue Mar 10, 2015 7:18 am

What does everyone do with the block mounted heat exchanger for the transmission. I've seen this style crack and take out the trans/cooling system with it and I don't want that to happen, plus my lines are leaking right where it bends to go to that cooler. I have a brand new stack plate cooler I could easily add to the front of the truck but I'm unsure whether it would cool it enough for heavy towing.

I've never seen a heat exchanger fail like that. I have seen lines rot off of them though. You can replace the lines with hose if need be. As for roaming heavy I would leave the heat exchanger and add a large aftermarket cooler with a fan under the bed. The non lockup 518 creates a lot of heat when its really getting used.

If you live in a cold climate that block mounted heater also helps bring the trans up to operating temps.

I never recommend removing that cooler.

Chances are you won't find an air to air cooler that works as well, even with a fan.
