flipping a 241

Postby burnt_servo » Sun Apr 05, 2015 7:13 pm

i'm thinking about taking a manual transmission and transfer case out of a 2000 dodge and putting it into 1977 behind a 12 valve .

I am assuming the transfer case is a 241 ( the transmission is a nv5600) .

are all 241's built the same ?

from what I have been seeing , it appears that a guy could take the rear part of the case off of a passenger side 241 and install it on a drivers side 241 , then flip the whole thing over so it comes off on the passenger side .

is seems the difference between the cases is where the oil pickup is located to feed the oil pump .

anyone ever try this of even heard about 2nd hand

Image

this is just a random pic of a 241 transfercase , but the case 1/2 in question has the round red and white tag on it .

No won't work all the oiling is different and you would burn it up really fast .
You could get a adapter and run a 205 fairly easy.

This is a 271, but the principle is the same, I figure.

I left a bit out of first post ....

the oil pickup on a 241 is in the rear section of the case . so in theory it should be possible to flip the transfer case over to the passenger side , then switch out the rear part of the case with one that would have the oil pickup on the bottom when it is on the passenger side .

so the question is , are all 241's similar enough to mix and match parts ......

it was those pics of that 271 that got me thinking about if the case half with the oil pickup on the opposite side could be used

I imagine most of the folks that have done the swap, have just flipped the driverside drop case and modified the oil pickup, not swapped parts around between a later model drivers drop 241 and an early model passenger side drop 241. What you should do is get your hands on both of them, and learn something for all of us ;) .

that is exactly what I'm thinking .... but the ones used with the v10 and diesel are some variation of heavy duty ..... I've seen and touched a grand total of 3 241's , all from diesels , so the non heavy duty ones are not exactly floating around here in large numbers .

so I was thinking of biting the bullet and buying one blind online and hope for the best ..... so which one might have the best success of working ?

didn't they use the 241 in the last few years of the first gen dodge 1/2 tons ?

My 89 RC had a 241, passenger drop. It is now behind my Cummins/727, I just bought a larger seal to put the 1410 yoke on the rear output.

I believe from 89-93 would have had the passenger drop 241

Ramchargers didn't have the Cummins diesel. I also had a 89 RC, it had a 241. From what I understand/guess, the 241d (d for Dodge) appeared around 88/89 and was used in all light duty RC, 1/2, 3/4 and 1 ton (light duty) Dodge gas trucks to at least 93 (94+ is not my specialty lol). Heavy duty 3/4 and 1 ton gas trucks got the 205. The 241d had 32 spline front and rear outputs and 23 spline female input shaft. 205 32 spline yokes are interchangeable with the 241d. A different seal is necessary with use of 205 yokes. If I had to guess, the light duty transfer case before the 241, used 81-88? was the 208. I believe it looks similar to the 241 and shares a 2.72 low range ratio. Don't quote me on all of this info, but I'm sure it's close lol.
