Oil circuit to allow O/D in any gear?

Postby Begle1 » Fri Dec 14, 2007 10:25 am

I just got off the phone with a Suncoast builder who notified me that it was possible to put an oil circuit in a 4-speed transmission that would enable overdrive in any gear.

Anybody else know that? I sure wish that I was notified of that by the guy who took my order. Don't know when I would ever use it, but it sounds like a handy feature...

You would have to make sure that over drive was A++++++designed to hold 1st and over drive

Why?????
Lets crunch some numbers shall we.

Gear ratios for auto as follows

1st 2.45:1
2nd 1.45:1
3rd 1.00:1
OD .69:1

Ok, lets take those number and apply the .69:1 overdrive ratio to them.
1st gear becomes 1.69:1 An advantage? I don't know.
2nd gear becomes 1.0005:1, no real advantage here.

I don really see an advantage doing something like that.

Thats not a leak, its the external lubrication system.

Hmm thanks Mike, for painting a better pitcher of it..........................
I guess if you need a taller axle gear to launch better or some thing......and you only raced 1/8 mile,,and never made it into over drive.......there might be a benefit to it.

As far as spitting gears, looks like you would need smaller overdrive ratio.

Interesting thought just the same ;)

Yes, the .78:1 ratio found in the gear vendor unit would work much better.
It would give 1st a 1.91:1, 2nd a 1.13:1, 3rd a .78:1 and OD would be .54:1

I don't see why you'd ever use it, especially since with any power it would probably destroy something, but it would be cool to have the ability. And you could say that you had a 6-speed.
