727 torque converter upgrade

Postby ggreenall90 » Sun May 24, 2015 6:45 pm

I'll be doing a rear main crank seal on my 89 D250 in the near future and was wondering if I should upgrade my converter. Truck has 135k miles on it and is bone stock. If upgrading what is a good brand that's reasonably priced to go with? Thanks

Much is made of the loose stock converters. Any company with a tighter converter is an upgrade, although i don't think there's much a point to doing it on a non-turned-up truck.

Then again, not much point in having a non-turned-up first gen. Have you tweaked yours or are you going to?

The stock converter was used as the dampner between the engine and drivetrain. There's all kinds of stories of dodge wasting driveshafts and whatnot while testing the cummins. To this day it's still true, I think, the high power engines are only available behind autos because Dodge knows they can just unlock them and turn that power into heat.

No reason to not get a better converter under any circumstance IMO. Just don't go too low on stall, and don't ask my opinion on what too low is. :P

Definitely upgrade the flex plate. Then I recommend either Diesel Performance Converters or Suncoast.

I went from a stock 270k mile converter and worn out transmission to a suncoast converter and an upgraded transmission. I gained 100 lbft of torque to the wheels. All else stayed the same. Same dyno, 1 year apart.

I'm not necessarily plugging for suncoast, as any of the big names make quality products, but I was very satisfied with the suncoast.

I used an "89% converter" either Goerend or DTT I think & a second gen flex plate.
With a Transgo Diesel valve body + Amsoil synthetic ATF I am very happy with the results.
