Drivetrain noise

Postby 1992gen1_fan » Tue Jul 07, 2015 8:18 pm

My truck started making a loud sound under load the other day. Looking for input before I take apart more than I need to looking for the source. Sound familiar to anyone?

Any input would be helpful, thanks

Today I had time to look at a couple things. The crank shaft has about 1/16" play in and out and the lower shaft in the getrag has a good 1/16" of play front-back and up and down.

Maybe that's what's making the noise?

Getting ready to go ahead and drop the transmission.

Found a couple pinion gear teeth in the bottom of the rear diff so the sound probably wasn't the transmission after all.

Since there is some play in the bearings in the transmission I'm going to order a bearing/syncro's kit and put them in while the transmission is out.

Just an update, I rebuilt the getrag since there was a little bit of play in the counter shaft and just a little in the main shaft. That's not what was causing the noise but just a matter of time and it probably would have been getting noisy. Got fresh cone bearings, syncro's, seals and an input shaft. The needle bearings still looked good.

Also, a mechanic told me since the rear diff went out, to check the syncro's in the getrag. He said when a diff goes out it can take the 3rd gear syncro's with it. Anyone else heared this? Makes sense but I never heared that until recently.
