727 to getrag

Postby Agentorange » Thu Oct 15, 2015 11:50 am

I know this topic has been done plenty of times but I want to make sure I'm getting all the parts I need. So far I have the transmission, ordering another bellhousing (odd chance the junk yard had a 1st gen to nv4500 advance adapter and I bought it without checking) and Clutch fork. I'm looking to buy a cheap clutch kit, with flywheel, looking on eBay and I'm having a hard time deciding what to look at. everything is pretty much 94 and up. I'm not towing anything large or putting crazy amount of power in my truck so I just need one that's good for a daily driver. For pedals only first gen clutch/brake assembly will work correct? I can find second gen assemblies all day but the first gens are more scarce. Can a dodge gas 150/250/350 pedal assembly be used?

The later gasser ones can, 92-93? as long as they are running a Hyd clutch system. If they are, then it will be a direct swap. The pedals form the earlier one will bolt in fine, and will work if you weld on a tab for the clutch master cylinder to attath to.

Clutch I would just go with an OEM style organic material unit....probably up to about 300HP?

Ok. I though there was one at the junk yard but it was an auto. Any pre installation maintanence I should do to the transmission? Replace anything important?

I'd open the side covers and drain out all the fluid. Check the bottom of the case for metal filings or pieces. If all looks good then put new side seal (PTO covers) gaskets, new tailshaft seal and over fill by 1 quart.

Ok thanks for the info. Close to keeping this swap under $900. Way better than the $3200 the one guy quoted me

Heck, I paid almost that for a quality clutch, 3" wide organic clutch facings, South Bend. It's ok to use "used" parts to keep cost down during builds, but varying clutch qualities is where I draw the line. Nothing is more frustrating than having to do a job more than once.

I'm getting a new luk clutch kit. I don't haul anything. Just a motorcycle or two. I only have a fuel pin and a 3200 spring so I don't think I need a heavy duty clutch for it. I got the trans with bellhousing for $525, luk clutch kit for $330 (on eBay they are $450-500 comes with flywheel) , hydros are another $85, clutch pedal $35, and if I can find a shifter for $50 that would be great. So really it's a little over a grand. Anything to get this dead 727 out of the truck. I'm starting to lose reverse and 3rd now

Is the shifter stub threaded? If so, the handle from a Dakota (really short) or a 2nd gen stick truck will screw right on there.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

I'm actually looking for the shifter stub. I found it from one place for $85. Little pricey I think. I'll keep calling places to find a whole assembly, I was wondering if dodge used the getrag company in other vehicles with the same shifter stub

$415 for new clutch kit with hydros

Just noticed the shift lug from 3-4 inside on the shift rails is broken. Probably no replacement part for that except get a new top cover? I could probably get something machined to replace it. How would I take the shift rails out?

Just found a NOS 3-4 shift lug for $68

Well I thought the $85 one was pricey but AAA dodge in California quoted me $250 for a shifter stub. Only one I found complete was in Canada for $150 that's the whole thing stub and stick. So far I have my clutch kit , flywheel, 2wd trans and bellhousing, hydros are on the way. I think the only things I need are the bolts that mate the bellhousing and trans, the clutch master mount, and the shifter assembly. Is there anything else I'm missing? The shifter forks are kind of scuffed up should I replace them? Or is it normal to have scratches and nicks?

Call Zumbrota Bearing and Gear for Getag parts. They have all the little parts. Preuse CL, Cumminsforum, TDR, etc for parts. WTB ads are your friend.

I have a shift fork. Not sure if it is 3-4 or 5-R. Will have to check.

I'll see what they have. I put out wanted ads on CL and called about 20 people across the US for parts and another 30 salvage yards in the US and Canada. Wish I could post up some wanted ads here but I need 25 posts. Does anyone know if Allstate gear is trust worthy? Their shifter forks are pretty cheap and that's where I'll be getting the shifter stub if I can't find it anywhere else

Not sure where to find parts, but thought I'd mention that all the roll pins should be replaced in the top cover. Pita if/when they come loose.
