727 endplay help please

Postby shackwrrr » Mon Oct 26, 2015 6:23 pm

Rebuilding my 727 in my w250 and I'm on final assembly. I didn't measure the endplay on disassembly but on assembly my endplay is 0.095, spec is 0.035-0.084. I have the thickest washer on the stator support. I don't really want to resort to the aftermarket bandaid shims. What else do I need to check?

when I rebuilt the 727 in my power wagon the endplay was very close to 100 thou .
it is my understanding it needs the end play to shift properly .

35 to 85 thou is a pretty large tolerance , my feeling is a extra 10 thou isn't a big deal .

btw I drove that truck as a daily driver for 8 years until the convertor finally ballooned . ( it was a high stall converter ) .

I'm in the same boat right now. With the transmission standing vertical, after re-assembly I was getting around .110 end play. After a little searching I read
somewhere to bolt on the tailhousing before checking end play. As I bolted it up
I watched the sun shell lift off of the rear drum considerably and now have around
.030, if I'm taking my measurements properly.

Once I get the gasket between the cases I should be within spec hopefully.

The trans must be completely assembled to check endplay, meaning tailhousing torqued with gasket and pump torqued with gasket. With the thickest washer between the input and intermediate shaft you should be close. Shoot for .020"-.030" total endplay.

If the output shaft sticks out past the end of the extension housing (all but one or two 4x4 versions do) you need to support the tranny to set endplay, resting the unit on the o/p shaft will change the endplay as opposed to supporting the tranny.
93 w250 6 speed 4" exhaust, caution, work truck, she's no beauty. building 1 ton dually 4x4, dana 80, 48rh, 205 Scratch the one ton, bought frt. dually 4x4 98 12 valve with the tiny rear doors. rides so much better than the 93.
