5th gear fun, again.

Postby mhuppertz » Wed Nov 11, 2015 2:11 pm

Trans was making noise going home (at first I thought the engine was letting go!), got louder and louder, then could feel it in the stick in 5th. The rest of the gears feel fine.

5th probably started spitting teeth or something. the gear may have been weakened the two times the nut backed off before I put on the permanent fix collar (assuming it is the gear).

I have a spare NV4500 (2x2) that I can yank the gear out of if that it all it is.

Fun fun fun!

Generally when the gear starts to go it also takes out the spline on the mainshaft. Have you updated the mainshaft?

I put 3 different 5th gear lock products on my NV4500 when I rebuilt it and converted it to 4wd. Hope it keeps that loose gear at bay as long as possible.

Hope it's a relatively easy fix.

I had the fully splined main shaft from Standard Transmissions.

Sure hope the main shaft isn't damaged. That means the trans will have to come out!

Guess I will replace the synchros while I have it apart if it comes to that.

Getting too old for this!

Tried that, didn't hold. Finally put in a spacer that locks the nut on. I though that would be the end of it because there is no way it can back off now.

It's butt cold outside so I am not relishing pulling it apart laying on the frozen gravel. My 54 year old bones are starting to creak merely at the thought of it!

Must have been a crappy weld. I've done several and have yet to have one back off.

Tig would be much better for this than mig (of course, you can pretty much always say that). The carbon in mig gas, which is usually 75/25 argon/co2 respectively or straight co2, causes the welds to be more brittle and prone to cracking and constant current processes pretty much always have better penetration at comparable parameters. Welding on hardened parts is always less than ideal too.

That's why I went the mechanical repair route.
