Differential Questions

Postby Primaris » Thu Dec 17, 2015 9:41 am

Hello

I need a new differential (not axle housing) for a W-350. In my research so far I have not found any aftermarket options. The "Bill of Materials" (605512-8) on the axel housing says it is a Dana 70-2U, 3.54, Limited Slip, 32 spline.

Are there any aftermarket differentials for this housing?
Is there any chance of finding an internal parts kit for the original case, new old stock?

Unless I can find some different options the list below is what I understand I need to purchase.

Dana 70-U parts list:
  • Differential case assembly - not available
  • Empty case kit - 708019
  • Inner parts kit - 2021290
  • Ring and pinion kit - 708015-1
  • Case bearings - 706047x
  • ABS tone ring - 42929

Fluid:
  • 80w-90, SFI GL5, Mil Spec 2105, 6.75 pints, 8-10 oz. friction modifier (3-5%)

So you are just in need of the ring & pinion, master bearing kit? Randy's ring and pinion can get the parts for them.

They make Detroits for them, I've got one in my Ramcharger. Quick way of replacing your case if that's what's wrong.

No. I need all the parts I've listed. The differental case would be reusable, but I cannot find an internal rebuild kit for it.

The Detroit Lockeris the diff that is locked when going straight but fuctions as an open when the truck is turning, right?

Got a part number? I have a call in to Eaton, but I have not heard back yet. I looked on Summit & Jegs but they don't list anything.

Have you looked on Randy's ring and pinion .

Yes. They don't have a 32 spline listed for a 1992.

If you've got your BOM and the spicer part numbers then just go off of that, not Randy's worthless search engine.

I had a huge fight with them over whether or not a standard Detroit would fit in my 3.07 housing. They refused to sell me a 4:10-down Detroit, insisting I had to use a 4.56-up Detroit and some kind of crazy "super shim" to space the locker over. I told them to get bent(they actually bent me over and made me pay return shipping, I'll never buy from them again), and bought what I knew would work from researching BOMs. Fit like a dream.

Just because they're supposedly differential professionals doesn't mean they know Dick about Dana 70's. Order what you need with the Spicer numbers you have and tell them to get bent if they tell you otherwise.

This is the exact Detroit I'm running in my 32-spline D70.

Is there a reason you can't get a used carrier and put in new bearings and gears? Or get one with gears and just rebearing it?

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

Dana no longer sells the internals for my carrier.

If I'm thinking right, the only thing in my open carrier was 4 spider gears and some thrust washers.

In an open diff that sounds about right. The factory limited slip diff is a clutch type differental. So there a ton more parts. I'm going to try to stick with a limited slip.

Here is an additional Dana part number:
  • Yoke 3-4-1189

Thanks for all the help! I decided to go with Dana parts.

These companies were super helpful with getting this figured out and ordered:
