518 band adjustment for 2nd

Postby 1STGENFARMBOY » Sun Jan 24, 2016 7:54 pm

Is the band adjustment for 2nd gear on the side of the trans or the one under the pan ? ?

thanks Dar

Andy I have a copy of that in my file, but I read it a couple times and didn't find where it said what adjusted what gear.

thanks Philip.

"update" truck would take a loooooooooong time to really just attempt to shift into 2nd when cold, hot you could feel it shift but slip terribly, I would let off and it would go on and shift, I thought she was done as I had already done a band adjustment 4 years ago, my adjustment screw on the side of the trans is a female T45 I believe which is different than some I have seen that is a male.....funny eh....., and It went in almost so far the lock nut would just catch maybe 3 threads, this will for sure be the last time.

truck shifts great now and I hope to get a few years out of it if I don't do any racing, or hot dogging..

well I didn't get but 1,500 miles before I got skeert and droped the VB to take a look at the band, it is gone.....to the metal gone.... so the trans is out and I am going to try my hand at a rebuild, put a trans-go kit in the VB last night, my red eagle kit came in yesterday and I ordered a Goerend 15 blade converter today, I really hope the shift is firm but not a bang.

I guess we will see how complicated it really is to put a kit in one, the good thing is my trans was working half way fine but you just couldn't even think about taking off fast unless you shifted it by hand and let the PSI build up a little, I have talked to a couple guys including Phillip and have looked at the problem parts, I think i can do it as long as I am not trying to trouble shoot a failure.

in my 32 years of turning wrenches this will be my first attempt at an auto rebuild.

picking up a brand new travel trailer tomorow and I just wanted the trans to be nice for some future travels.

wish me luck.

We wondered why you didn't show up this weekend. Philip said he thought you had it apart. It's not hard to do, most people think it runs on squirrels and are afraid to get bit, but I just wear heavy gloves. Take your time and follow the book.

Yep, got the trans-go kit in the VB, and got the O/D unit done last night, and as usual while taking things apart I saw some things that need addressed, some wireing needs taped, and I am going to work on my exaust a little, and both seals in the TC, I am going to see if i can fix the 4x4 indecator light switch, needs a battery terminal, and I am sure when I lay under it a few more min i will find more.

I did my first 727 auto tranny last year.....not as bad as I had thought, though the OD unit on the A518 requires a bit more work. Things tend to snowball once you get into it. ;)
