a518 Throttle Valve Cable Source?

Postby Ramcharger87 » Sun Feb 21, 2016 12:56 pm

HI everyone. New guy here with his 1st question. I'm in the process of swapping in a 93 5.9L Cummins / A518 into my 87 Ramcharger. I'm gathering up the last few parts for the swap and I am stumped on where to locate a new TV cable for this trans. A search here, the local parts stores, NAPA, Rock Auto and Geno's has turned up empty. I'm sure someone here has a source or a trick of modding a different cable to work. Care if I pick your brains?

To my knowledge there is no source for new TV cables. So you will have to find a used one from a cummins truck....or make another make/model work. I do not know of any inter model interchange. Perhaps Lokar might have a TV cable that would work?

Have you tried the dealer? I know that's a dirty word, but sometimes that's the only place to get things.

:pale: AH! You used the "D" word on my first post?? JK. Actually I stopped at the local Dodge Garage on my way home from work this morning. After 15 minutes of looking, the counter guy finally found a Mopar part number for the "Throttle Kickdown Cable for 91-92-93 Ram 250 - 350 with CTD Engine". He quoted me the list price (of course) of $140.00. A Google search of the number revealed a few other Mopar parts dealers with prices in the $90.00 range. That Mopar part number is: 53009056 if anyone is interested. I'm gonna contact Lokar to see what they offer, as it appears the 727 used in the 89-90 trucks used the same cable for their kickdown (rumored, not verified??). I'll let you know what Lokar says if anyone is interested. Thanks all!

I'm sorry, I can't help it. :( If the other guys weren't dicks too they would have warned you about me.

I've done exactly what you did many times, get a part number and then go searching. $140 is steep, finding it for 90 sounds reasonable after the shock of list price. Keep looking, I'm sure you can find it.

Well, Mike from Lokar replied to my inquiry today. They do indeed offer a a518 cable assembly with all the necessary fittings and brackets. He forwarded me their assembly instructions so I could see how their cable works. It's designed for a gasser application but I think it could be easily converted / modded to use on a 1st Gen. Their part number is KD-2518HT and is sells for $74.99 at Summit Racing.

Is there any way to post the .pdf file that Lokar attached to their reply? Their instructions don't leave much to the imagination as far as how it would need to be modded to work.

I think it was member "Madmax" over on Ramcharger Central when building his RC cummins "Oxx" that he used a lokar cable for his kick down. I think he just had to weld on a tab to the throttle bracket for the cable to mount.

Thanks for the info on a possible product that will work for our 1st gen's. Always nice to be able to have an aftermarket solution to the drying up source of OEM parts. ;)

There is no way to post a PDF that I know of. Photo Bucket doesn't allow PDF's eather. Tried that a long time ago.

Thanks for the link. Now when someone searches they can find the part.

How about snapping a few pics of the instructions, or taking a screen shot, or snip of the screen, then posting those up. ;)

OK. Is there any way of posting a screen shot (or pic) here without using a hosting site?

Not that I know about. Do you not have a hosting site account?

I do. But I find them to be a pain. Lots easier to upload directly from my 'putor.
