Getrag rebuild, upgrade options?

Postby liftarc » Tue Apr 05, 2016 6:40 pm

I'm having my getrag rebuilt before I do the swap, I'll clean up and reseal the 205 myself. Are there any upgrades or mods I should consider for the trans? It worked fine, just a preemptive rebuild at 180k miles. I haven't decided on flywheel/clutch either so I'd appreciate suggestions there too.

Truck will be used for traveling on long trips for work with a light to moderate load of tools and pipe. Some light offroading, no heavy hauling. 3.54 gears, around 35" tires.

Might as well rebuild the get rag yourself, not hard.

I would do a full re-bearing kit and check your syncros for wear and top cover for play.

When I replaced the bearings in mine everything else looked good so back together it went.

I would like to do it myself but I really dont have time, as it is I only see my kids one or two days a week. I travel for work a lot.

About the top cover slop, how would that be fixed? Used replacement? The shop should be calling me today to let me know what they found inside and discuss options.

yup, the top can be replaced as a unit. Might not be an issue though.

So I got my trans back. Top cover was good, input shaft was toast, pitting and chunks of teeth gone. New input, new syncros, new bearings....more than I wanted to spend but glad its done. I have some pictures but photobucket isnt cooperating so Ill have to try again later maybe.

Parts rig had a stock 13" Sachs clutch. The pilot bushing is so wore out and sloppy its no wonder why the input was trashed in a trans that otherwise looked pretty good overall.

I know I want to go to a sealed bearing on the pilot, I dont mind the machine work, but I havent been able to finds a Sachs clutch set. I have seen that the South Bend setup (13125-OKHD) includes a flywheel with pilot bearing. I originally budgeted $1k for clutch expecting to go with a SB setup but after reading reviews Im not so sure, seems theres a significant portion of guys that regret buying them. Idk if thats mostly just the guys overclutching their application but with the trans going overbudget Id like to save on the clutch if I can.

Im wondering if a Sachs clutch kit is available or is there a recomended OE replacement that is of equal quality? Im not liking the idea of a cheepo parts house set, Id rather buy the SB.

My 91 has that south bend 13125-OKHD in it and it is a pretty good clutch...I've beat it pretty hard and it has been good to me. I did get it hot once, but that was my own stupidity. I believe Ellis is running one too...

Good to know, thank you. Im guessing the 13125-OKHD is designed for the 2nd gens and also sold for 1st gens?

One of my mbz diesel friends suggested sending the sachs disc and pressure plate to Clutchnet in the LA area to be rebuilt with new friction materials of my choice. I think Ill call them tomorrow to get more info.

I have a Valair in my truck. It was less than 1/2 what a SB would cost for the same clutch at the time. I don't know what they cost now comparatively to SB, I got mine 4-5 years ago and have beat the everloving crap out of it.

Oh damn, I suppose that noticeably affects road manners. I called Valair and they recommended a single disc organic for me, which is plenty of clutch for my application and the $630 price with ball bearing pilot flywheel is good for me too. Thanks again for suggesting Valair.

Yeah, it don't back a trailer up hill very nice! It's way more clutch than I need for what I do, I got it back when "bigger has got to be better!" was my primary thought process.

You're Welcome!
